How to Clean a Rains Rain Jacket Without Damaging Its Coating

A Rains rain jacket needs a different cleaning decision from a fleece or a membrane hiking shell. Its coated exterior can collect road spray, sunscreen and collar marks, but heat treatment and wash-in waterproofers are not automatic finishing steps. Start with the sewn-in label for your exact garment. This guide covers routine care of Rains polyurethane-coated rainwear, including a limited surface clean and a full wash when that label permits it. It does not extend the jacket instructions to bags, insulated coats or every item sold under the Rains name.

What you will need

  • Sewn-in care label and exact garment name
  • Clean, soft microfiber cloths
  • Rains Fabric Cleaner for compatible surface stains
  • Mild laundry detergent without bleach or softener
  • Clean hanger and ventilated drying space
  • Small bowl of clean water for cloth rinsing

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Check the label and coating

Open the jacket and read the washing, ironing and drying symbols before choosing a method. Rains' rainwear care guide puts the individual label first. Look closely at cuffs, shoulder folds and pocket edges. Ordinary dirt transfers to a cloth; a surface that is peeling, sticky or separating needs assessment by Rains. Photograph damage before doing anything else. Cleaning is not a repair for a failing coating, and repeated scrubbing can obscure the difference between a stain and material loss.

Step 2: Decide whether the whole garment needs washing

Spread the jacket on a clean surface and check inside as well as outside. A single muddy splash calls for a local clean; widespread collar soil, perspiration or grime throughout the lining may justify a label-approved full wash. Empty every pocket, including any small inner compartment. Shake out loose grit over a bin, then lift remaining surface dust gently with a dry microfiber cloth. Do not rub sand into the coating. Keeping the loose-dirt stage dry also helps you see which marks actually remain.

Step 3: Treat a small exterior mark gently

For compatible coated rainwear, Rains recommends its Fabric Cleaner and microfiber cloth. Follow the cleaner's directions, test a discreet area first, and stop if color or finish changes. Work only on the marked section and move to a fresh cloth face as dirt transfers. Avoid stiff brushes, abrasive erasers and solvent stain removers. Do not combine several household products in search of a stronger result. If a stain remains after a careful attempt, ask Rains about that substance and garment rather than extending the contact time indefinitely.

Step 4: Prepare a machine-washable jacket

Only use this branch when the garment label permits machine washing. Empty pockets, close zippers and snaps, and turn the jacket inside out to protect its coated face. Keep it away from items with exposed hooks or abrasive hardware. Check that the detergent drawer is not carrying leftover softener or bleaching product. Choose similar colors and leave enough room for the garment to move. Photograph an unclear care label and ask the manufacturer before proceeding; another Rains jacket washing successfully does not establish permission for yours.

Step 5: Wash within the garment's limits

The general Rains guide specifies 30°C with mild detergent, no bleach, no softener and no waterproofing additives. A stricter sewn-in instruction controls. Measure detergent for the load and local water conditions instead of pouring extra onto a stain. Rinse thoroughly. If you can still see suds or feel detergent residue, use a label-compatible additional rinse rather than covering the smell with fragrance. Do not add a membrane-shell treatment just because the jacket is waterproof. The outer coating and care instructions determine the method.

Step 6: Air-dry and leave wrinkles alone

Hang the jacket where air can reach both exterior and interior. Open pockets after washing so trapped moisture can escape, and wait until cuffs, hems and folds are dry before storing. Do not tumble-dry as a routine waterproofing step. Rains' general webpage contains differing statements about ironing, while some product labels prohibit it; use the garment label and choose no heat if uncertain. Hanging is the conservative approach. Avoid pressing a stubborn crease or steaming a damp coated area simply to make the garment look ready sooner.

Step 7: Recheck marks, odor and storage

Inspect the dry jacket in good light. A remaining stain, coating defect and moisture trapped inside a pocket are different problems. For mild mustiness, Rains suggests airing the garment inside out; an odor that returns after proper cleaning deserves another inspection, not repeated perfume applications. Store only when fully dry, with room around the garment rather than tightly compressed among damp clothes. Keep a note of the cleaner and wash settings that worked. This makes later care repeatable without escalating temperature or detergent strength.

Specific cleaning questions

Open a question for a concise answer about stains, odors, safety, frequency, and troubleshooting.

Can I put a Rains jacket in the washing machine?
Only if its own label permits it. The general rainwear instructions use 30°C, but bags and other coated products can have different restrictions.
Should I use a waterproofing wash?
No wash-in waterproofing additive is part of Rains' general jacket-cleaning method. Do not borrow a treatment routine from a different waterproof fabric.
Can I tumble-dry it on low?
Air-dry instead. Low heat is still heat, and the general rainwear guide recommends avoiding the dryer to protect the waterproof layer.
Is fabric softener suitable?
No. Leave out fabric softener and use a mild detergent. Check combination laundry products so softener is not included unintentionally.
How do I remove wrinkles?
Start by hanging the garment. Follow its specific ironing or steaming label; do not treat general website heat advice as permission for every jacket.
What if the coating feels sticky?
Stop rubbing and contact Rains with the model and photographs. Sticky or peeling material should not be treated as ordinary removable dirt.
Can I use this method on a Rains backpack?
Not automatically. Similar-looking coated bags may prohibit machine washing. Read the bag's own label and care instructions separately.
How often should I wash the jacket?
Base full washing on actual soil, odor and the label. Remove local splashes promptly and dry the jacket after wet use; there is no universal weekly requirement.
