How to Clean a Red Sea ReefWave Pump
A Red Sea ReefWave is a cross-flow aquarium pump with two impeller assemblies, cages, a motor block, shaft, seals, brackets and a controller. Red Sea recommends cleaning the pump impellers every month and cleaning the motor and shaft every six months for continued quiet operation. The controller and power supply stay dry, while removable wet-side parts can be disassembled and cleaned according to the ReefWave guide. Preserve the left and right orientation of cages and impellers, because a physically clean pump can still run poorly if those pieces are swapped, reversed or not seated fully.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Review the interval and label left and right parts
Confirm the ReefWave model and read its exploded diagram. Red Sea calls for monthly impeller cleaning and a motor-and-shaft service every six months. Prepare two labeled areas for left and right cages, bearings and impellers. Do not rely on memory after mineral deposits and wet parts make markings difficult to see.
Step 2: Pause flow and disconnect power
Use the controller or ReefBeat maintenance mode if appropriate, then unplug the pump and power supply with dry hands. Keep the controller, driver, connectors and adapter away from water. Wait for both impellers to stop before touching the pump. Never remove a running pump or power a dry, disassembled motor.
Step 3: Remove the pump from its mount
Support the pump body while releasing it from the bracket by the manual's sequence. Keep magnets controlled and separated from metal tools and sensitive equipment. Lift the pump without pulling on the cable. Inspect the cable entry and motor housing; a damaged cable or cracked sealed motor block requires service, not immersion.
Step 4: Remove cages and impellers in order
Release the end caps or cages and slide out each impeller assembly with its bushing or seal as shown. Place every part on its labeled side. Do not twist delicate blades, force a shaft or lose a small rubber piece. Photograph the blade orientation before cleaning if this is the first service.
Step 5: Brush loose algae and deposits
Use clean water and a soft brush on impeller blades, cages and flow channels. Work between vanes without levering them. Remove snails, sand and calcium grit from bearing surfaces. Avoid metal wire brushes and abrasive pads that can score balanced rotating parts and produce noise.
Step 6: Descale only with an approved method
If hard calcium remains, use the Red Sea-approved solution, dilution and contact time for ReefWave wet-side parts. Keep the controller, connectors and any non-submersible component out of the bath. Do not mix acid with bleach or another cleaner. A short controlled treatment is preferable to an indefinite soak that may affect seals.
Step 7: Perform the six-month motor and shaft cleaning
At the longer interval, follow Red Sea's guide to access and clean the motor and shaft components intended for owner maintenance. Brush the shaft, internal flow path and bearing seats gently. Do not open the sealed electronics or pull the cable gland. Inspect O-rings and bushings for flattening, cracks or swelling.
Step 8: Rinse every treated part thoroughly
Use clean water to remove loosened deposits and every trace of descaling solution. Rotate impellers by hand in the rinse water and inspect hidden faces. Cleaner residue should not enter a reef aquarium. Wipe the exterior cable and mount with a damp cloth without wetting the dry-side electrical connections.
Step 9: Reassemble the correct sides and orientations
Return bearings, seals, impellers and cages to their original sides and directional positions. Each piece should seat without force and the impellers should turn freely. Reinstall the pump in its mount with safe magnet handling and confirm the cable is not pinched, stretched or rubbing a sharp cabinet edge.
Step 10: Restart at low output and verify operation
Submerge the fully assembled pump, reconnect dry electrical connections and start at a lower setting. Listen for clicking or grinding and observe even cross-flow from both sides. Stop immediately if an impeller stalls, the motor vibrates strongly or a cage is loose. Restore the programmed schedule only after quiet stable operation is confirmed.
