How to Clean a Rolex Watch Safely
Rolex's official day-to-day care is intentionally simple: preserve the watch's luster with an occasional microfiber cloth, and on compatible watches wash the case and metal bracelet with soapy water and a soft brush. Before water cleaning, Rolex says the winding crown must be screwed down properly against the case to maintain waterproofness. After exposure to seawater, salt and sand should be rinsed away with fresh water. Those instructions are not universal permission to wash every Rolex configuration. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Verify the reference, strap and condition
Confirm the exact Rolex model and whether it has a metal bracelet, leather strap or another material. Examine the crystal, crown, case back, pushers and bracelet for damage. Use only dry microfiber on a watch whose waterproofness is uncertain, and obtain reference-specific care for leather and vintage pieces.
Step 2: Secure the winding crown fully
Rolex requires the screw-down crown to be tightened properly against the case before water cleaning. Do this with dry clean fingers and do not force it past its normal stop. On chronograph models, ensure screw-down pushers are also in their normal sealed position as the user guide directs.
Step 3: Begin with a microfiber wipe
Use a clean microfiber cloth to remove fingerprints and loose dust from the crystal, case and bracelet. This is Rolex's normal occasional-care method and may be all that is needed. Do not rub visible sand into polished surfaces; rinse a compatible sealed watch first.
Step 4: Prepare mild soapy water for compatible models
Mix a small amount of mild plain soap with warm water. Avoid jewelry dip, household disinfectant, toothpaste, baking soda, metal polish and abrasive cloth. Remove a leather strap from the water path and do not transfer the metal-bracelet method to an uncertain strap or decorative insert.
Step 5: Wash case and metal bracelet gently
Moisten the sealed compatible watch and use a very soft brush to work mild soapy water around bracelet links, clasp recesses, case edges and the back. Keep pressure light around polished and brushed transitions. Do not pry around the bezel, crown or crystal with a pick.
Step 6: Rinse away soap, salt and sand
Rinse thoroughly with clean fresh water so soap does not remain inside the bracelet. Rolex specifically says fresh water should remove salt and sand after a day at the sea. Use a gentle stream rather than a high-pressure jet, and keep the crown closed throughout.
Step 7: Dry the watch and bracelet
Blot with a soft lint-free towel, then use microfiber around the clasp, links and case. Let remaining water drain at room temperature before wearing or storing. Do not use compressed air, a hair dryer or direct heat, which can force moisture or expose seals to temperature stress.
Step 8: Inspect for conditions cleaning cannot fix
Look for moisture beneath the crystal, crown resistance, a loose bracelet component or an altered finish. Scratches are not dirt and routine polishing can change Rolex case geometry and factory finishing. Internal haze, sealing concerns or mechanical changes call for an Official Rolex Retailer or service center.
