How to Clean a Ruggable Rug and Rug Pad
Ruggable sells both 2-Piece systems, where a washable Rug Cover attaches to a separate Rug Pad, and All-in-One rugs, where the backing stays attached during washing. Confusing the two can ruin the pad or leave a heavy rug wet inside. Ruggable says a separate Rug Pad must never be machine-washed, tumble-dried, bleached, or submerged; it is spot-cleaned instead. Cover materials also matter: flatwoven, Plush, Shag, Re-Jute, outdoor, and tufted products can have different machine capacity, detergent, vacuum, and drying instructions. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify the rug system and material
Read the sewn label before detaching anything. A 2-Piece system has a removable cover and separate pad; an All-in-One rug is washed as one piece. Also identify flatwoven, Plush, Shag, tufted, Re-Jute, or outdoor construction. Do not borrow instructions from a different Ruggable line, because washer capacity, vacuum settings, and drying allowances can change.
Step 2: Vacuum loose soil gently
Use low suction, a high-pile or high-carpet setting, and a soft flexible bristle head. Avoid stiff brush bars that grab the cover. If the cover lifts, reduce suction and move the head in a push-only direction rather than repeated back-and-forth strokes. Stay away from edges and corners. Ruggable discourages robot vacuums because they may catch an edge or separate the layers.
Step 3: Blot fresh spills before they spread
Lift solids with a spoon, then blot liquid with a clean white cloth from the outside toward the center. Do not rub, which drives soil into fibers and enlarges the mark. For a 2-Piece system, separate the cover if liquid reached the pad. Treat according to the material label with mild soap or detergent, then remove residue rather than saturating the area.
Step 4: Detach a 2-Piece Rug Cover
Roll or peel the cover from the pad gradually so it does not stretch. Shake or vacuum away dry grit from both layers. Mark or photograph the pad orientation if needed for reassembly. Never fold a wet cover against the pad, and never place the separate pad in the washing machine.
Step 5: Load the washer without overcrowding
Place a 2-Piece cover design-side out, or load the complete All-in-One rug as its label directs. Do not cram a large rug into a home washer; Ruggable recommends a commercial-size machine when the care chart requires it. Balance the load without adding items that shed lint or contain zippers. Use cold water and a delicate cycle.
Step 6: Choose detergent for the exact cover
Use a mild, non-bleach detergent. Ruggable says not to use bleach, and flatwoven and outdoor covers should not receive fabric softener because it can affect the material. Follow the product label for other constructions. Do not add extra detergent to attack odor; trapped soap attracts soil and can leave the cover stiff.
Step 7: Dry the cover or All-in-One rug completely
Tumble dry thoroughly on low heat or air-dry only as the label permits. High heat can affect backing and shape. Check the center, edges, corners, and backing for cool damp spots before stopping. A thick or large rug may need repositioning and extra air time. Never return a damp backing to wood or another moisture-sensitive floor.
Step 8: Spot-clean the separate Rug Pad
For dry debris, sweep or vacuum the pad on low suction. For a wet mess, blot, then use mild soap and water only on the affected area. Rinse residue with a well-wrung cloth and let the pad air-dry completely. Never machine-wash, tumble-dry, bleach, submerge, or saturate a separate Ruggable Rug Pad.
Step 9: Reassemble squarely
Put the dry pad on a clean dry floor in its original orientation. Align the dry cover at one edge and unroll it smoothly, pressing from the center outward so there are no bubbles, wrinkles, or exposed pad sections. For an All-in-One rug, lay it flat and allow any remaining curl to relax without applying direct heat.
Step 10: Check the floor and revise the routine
Lift a corner after the first day to confirm both the backing and floor remain dry. Address stains early and vacuum gently so machine washing is needed only when appropriate. If seams separate, backing cracks, color transfers, or the rug remains misshapen after correct drying, stop aggressive cleaning and contact Ruggable with the product label and care history.
