How to Clean a ScanSnap iX1600: Glass and Rollers
Vertical lines in a scan can come from dirty glass, while feeding trouble can involve the paper path or rollers. A ScanSnap iX1600 therefore needs more than a wipe across its lid. Its touch panel, housing, scanning glass and motor-driven rollers also have different cleaning rules. This guide separates those areas and makes the powered roller-cleaning exception explicit. Use the iX1600 examples in PFU's instructions, not the button sequence shown for another scanner sharing the same online help page.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Empty the scanner and let the glass cool
Remove documents and any attached Receipt Guide as shown in the iX1600 instructions. Turn the scanner off, unplug its power cable and disconnect other cables for exterior work. Wait at least 15 minutes before internal cleaning because the glass may be hot. Keep loose accessories away from children. Set the scanner on a stable surface and open the ADF through its normal release. Do not start by spraying air into the feed slot: PFU warns against aerosol and alcohol sprays around accumulated paper dust.
Step 2: Separate the touch panel from housing care
Use a soft dry cloth on the touch panel. Do not transfer the damp cloth used on the body to the screen. The housing may be wiped dry or with a cloth lightly moistened using Cleaner F1 or mild detergent, but liquid must not enter the machine. Water and detergent are not approved for its internal cleaning route. Keeping three zones in mind—dry screen, controlled exterior wiping and F1-treated internal cloth—prevents a seemingly harmless general wipe from crossing the manufacturer's material boundaries.
Step 3: Clean the scanning glass after use
PFU's daily-care instructions call for cleaning the glass after scanning. Use the iX1600 illustrations to locate it and wipe with a cloth moderately moistened with Cleaner F1. Carefully remove adhesive residue without scratching or flooding the surface. Wipe away the cleaner so none remains. Inspect the full scanning width rather than only the area below an obvious streak. A narrow smear can be easy to miss against transparent glass, so check again before closing the feeder.
Step 4: Clean the stationary paper-path components
Follow the iX1600 portion of the regular-care guide for the brake roller, pick roller, rubber and plastic idler rollers, and ultrasonic sensor. Keep power disconnected during this part. Use moderate F1 on the cloth, not free liquid. Work carefully around the internal mechanism and do not snag springs with cloth or fingers. The shared help page also displays components from other models; identify each iX1600 component visually before touching it instead of assuming every item listed is present.
Step 5: Use the designated powered mode for drive rollers
Only for the feed and eject rollers, reconnect power as PFU directs. On the iX1600 touch panel, open Settings, then Maintenance, then Roller cleaning. Holding Run turns the rollers; releasing it stops them. Follow the illustrated cloth position and keep fingers, loose cloth and jewelry clear of moving mechanisms. Do not force these rollers manually or borrow the three-second Scan-button procedure from a different model. Finish this controlled step before returning to any area requiring unplugged access; powered roller cleaning is a narrow exception, not general cleaning permission.
Step 6: Close the feeder and scan a clean test sheet
Make sure cleaner residue has been removed and the internal surfaces are dry before resuming document scanning. Refit any removed accessory correctly and close the ADF normally. Scan a plain test page and compare both sides. PFU's streak troubleshooting identifies internal dirt as a cause and recommends a hard, stable support surface. If the mark persists, note its location and whether it occurs on one side or both. Do not compensate by soaking the glass.
Step 7: Match maintenance to document condition
The general internal-cleaning guideline is every 1,000 sheets, with earlier attention for dirtier documents or loose toner. Daily glass care remains a separate task. Record feed failures and streaks independently so one successful cleaning step does not hide another unresolved problem. Software options for reducing vertical streaks, described in PFU's image guidance, are not proof that the physical glass is clean. Persistent errors or worn components need the matching troubleshooting or replacement procedure, not stronger solvent.
