How to Clean SeaSucker Vacuum Mounts and Pumps
A SeaSucker rack depends on clean sealing edges and working vacuum pumps, not just a polished top surface. Grit at the pad edge, water in a pump cylinder or damaged rubber can affect the mount's ability to hold. This guide covers routine pad and pump care on SeaSucker vacuum mounts used with vehicle racks. It does not replace your rack's mounting, load or travel instructions, and a pad that repeatedly loses vacuum should not be trusted merely because it has been washed.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Unload and remove the rack before maintenance
Remove the carried equipment and release the rack using its normal instructions. Work on a clean surface where the sealing face will not collect grit. Do not pull a pump apart while the mount supports a bicycle or other load. Look at every mount rather than servicing only the one easiest to reach. If a plunger extended unexpectedly during the last journey, note which mount it was so its pad, pump and mounting surface can be checked as a complete system.
Step 2: Clean the entire sealing edge
Before use, wipe the pad with water and a soft cloth or sponge. For a deeper clean, use mild dish soap, rinse and remove residue. SeaSucker's maintenance instructions call for this deeper attention every couple of months and after saltwater or heavy dirt exposure. Work around the full lower outer edge, not only the broad middle. Do not use abrasive pads or harsh solvents. Put a freshly cleaned pad onto a clean surface, not back into the sand you just removed.
Step 3: Inspect the rubber before blaming the pump
Examine the edge for cuts, cracks, roughness or stiffness. Replace a damaged pad rather than sanding, trimming or covering the defect with sealant. SeaSucker identifies edge damage as a route for air to enter beneath the mount. Good lighting helps distinguish a removable speck from a nick in the rubber. If you are unsure, compare with an undamaged pad and ask the manufacturer. A rack holding briefly in the driveway is not evidence that a visibly damaged seal is suitable for travel.
Step 4: Clean and dry the pump cylinder
Pull the plunger straight out of its cylinder. Clean inside with mild dish soap and a soft cloth or paper towel, then remove remaining moisture completely. Wipe the plunger clean as well. Water left in the cylinder can interfere with the check valve and produce a popping sound. Keep debris off the removed plunger while you work. Do not probe internal passages with a sharp tool or add a different solvent because the cylinder is awkward to reach; careful wiping is the manufacturer's routine method.
Step 5: Lubricate the small gasket, not the pad face
Apply a thin layer of the specified silicone gel to the black rubber gasket at the tip of the plunger. Reinsert the plunger and pump several times to seat it and distribute the lubricant. This is a targeted maintenance step, not a direction to coat the broad vacuum pad or vehicle paint in grease. More lubricant is not automatically better. If the pump remains sticky or does not behave normally after correct cleaning and lubrication, arrange replacement or manufacturer support before loading the rack.
Step 6: Clean the mounting surface and check the indicator
SeaSucker's official FAQ also calls for removing dirt from the vehicle's mounting surface. Refit the rack according to its exact instructions and pump each mount until its indicator shows the required vacuum. The orange band becoming visible indicates vacuum loss; do not ignore a band that quickly reappears. Check the rack before entering the vehicle and at journey stops. No single cleaning method creates a guaranteed hold time independent of surface, temperature, load and pad condition.
Step 7: Store with covers and adjust care to conditions
Fit the protective covers when the rack is stored and keep the sealing edges free of pressure from loose tools or grit. After saltwater exposure, rinse with fresh water and ensure pump interiors are drained and dry. The FAQ distinguishes cold-weather mounting: do not wet the sealing edge in freezing or near-freezing conditions, and let stiff cold rubber warm toward room temperature before remounting. Cleaning and correct storage reduce avoidable contamination, but they do not replace inspections, load limits or your product's travel checks.
