How to Clean a Shark CarpetXpert EX200
Shark recommends cleaning the CarpetXpert after every use to limit odor, bacteria, and mold. The EX200 combines an upright carpet-cleaning head with a hose and hand tool, so both airflow paths can hold wet lint even when the recovery tank has been emptied. This guide centers on EX200 and EX200C models; CarpetXpert HairPro EX300 and StainStriker portable PX200 machines have different components. The practical sequence is to empty and rinse the tanks, run the model's Clean & Empty routine, flush the hose after hand-tool use, clear hair from accessible brush and nozzle areas, and air-dry removable parts. Keep the powered housing, cord, and fixed electrical connections out of water.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: End the cleaning pass and remove power
Return the handle upright, release the solution trigger, switch the machine off, and unplug it. Wait for moving parts to stop. Place the unit on a washable hard surface because the foot and hose may release a small amount of liquid. Verify EX200 or EX200C on the label before using this sequence.
Step 2: Empty the recovery tank and lift out the float
Release the dirty-water tank and carry it upright. Remove its lid and inner float in the order shown by Shark, then pour out the wastewater. Keeping the float in place while pouring can trap debris or interfere with emptying. Remove hair and foam from the float and confirm it can move freely when reassembled.
Step 3: Rinse the dirty tank, lid, and float
Rinse each removable piece with clean lukewarm water and use a soft brush at corners, screens, and sealing edges. Avoid abrasive pads that can scratch the clear tank or damage a gasket. Rinse away all suds; foam left in the recovery side can falsely activate the float and reduce pickup on the next job.
Step 4: Empty and rinse the clean-solution system
Remove leftover solution from the clean tank, then rinse the tank and cap. Do not store diluted formula in the machine and do not add bleach, vinegar, laundry detergent, dish soap, or essential oil. Use the ratios and Shark cleaning solutions approved for the exact model to protect the pump and control foaming.
Step 5: Run the Clean & Empty routine
Reinstall the empty, clean recovery tank and prepare the clean-water side as the EX200 guide directs. Use the Clean & Empty control on a suitable surface so fresh water moves through the upright head's internal path and is recovered into the dirty tank. Empty that tank again when the routine finishes. Do not walk away while a wet system is running.
Step 6: Flush the hose after using the hand tool
Fit the rinse or hand-tool cleaning attachment specified by Shark and draw clean water through the hose. The EX200 FAQ describes this accessory as a way to clean inside the hose after mess pickup. Continue only long enough to clear visible residue, then power off and unplug before releasing the attachment.
Step 7: Clean the hand tool and suction channels
Rinse the removable tool, brush edge, and transparent suction opening. Use a small soft brush to lift carpet fiber and pet hair from narrow channels. Check the hose cuff and its seal. Do not drive a metal rod into the hose, split bonded tool shells, or detach the fixed hose from the powered body unless a Shark service procedure specifically requires it.
Step 8: Clear the nozzle and brushroll area
With the unit unplugged, remove accessible hair and lint from the nozzle lip, suction opening, and brushroll ends. Use only documented latches to open a cover. If cutting wrapped fiber is permitted, keep blunt scissors parallel to the roll and away from bristles, belts, seals, and the housing. A jammed roll that cannot turn freely needs troubleshooting, not forced rotation.
Step 9: Wipe the base and dry wet-side parts
Wipe the unplugged housing, handle, tank wells, cord, and exterior hose with a damp cloth, then dry. Never rinse the motor housing or spray the controls. Set the tanks, lids, float, caps, tools, and removable covers separately on a ventilated rack. Let the hose drain with its end open and avoid direct heat.
Step 10: Reassemble and store only when dry
Reinstall the float in its correct orientation, seat the dirty-tank lid evenly, and click both tanks and tools into place. Make sure the hose is wrapped without a tight kink. Store the CarpetXpert empty and indoors. If odor returns, repeat the hose, float, and nozzle cleaning rather than masking it with fragrance inside the tanks.
