How to Clean a Sleep Number 360 Mattress
A Sleep Number 360 smart bed contains air chambers, foam comfort layers, hoses and electronics beneath a tailored mattress cover. Sleep Number's current mattress-cleaning guidance says not to remove that cover, to use minimal water with a clean white cloth, and not to machine-wash, dry-clean or apply stain guard because those choices can shrink or discolor the fabric. That makes blotting and controlled spot cleaning the correct response to a surface spill; flooding, steam extraction and opening the mattress can move moisture into foam and components that are difficult to dry. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Protect power and identify what was spilled
Unplug the bed's powered components before cleaning near the mattress edge, hoses, pump or base, using dry hands. Remove bedding and check whether the spill is plain water, a colored drink, oil, bodily fluid or a chemical. Address it promptly. For a large spill that may have entered the mattress or base, contact Sleep Number rather than unzipping the cover or probing internal layers.
Step 2: Blot—do not rub or flood
Press a clean white absorbent cloth onto the spot, lift and move to a dry section. Work from the outside toward the center so the stain does not spread. Sleep Number emphasizes minimal water. Do not scrub the fabric, pour water over it, use a carpet extractor or stand on the mattress to squeeze liquid into foam.
Step 3: Vacuum dry debris gently
If the problem is crumbs, dust or dried surface matter, vacuum with a clean upholstery tool at low suction before damp cleaning. Keep the nozzle flat and moving so it does not pull the cover. Avoid seams, hose connections and a damaged area. Do not sprinkle baking soda into openings or use a rotating brush head that can pill fabric.
Step 4: Spot-clean with a white damp cloth
Dampen—not soak—a clean white cloth with water and wring it thoroughly. Dab the mark repeatedly, checking whether color or soil transfers. Clean a slightly wider feathered area to avoid a sharp water ring, but keep the total moisture small. Never remove the main mattress cover for washing; Sleep Number warns that machine washing or dry cleaning can shrink it.
Step 5: Use mild detergent only for stubborn compatible soil
If water alone does not lift an ordinary washable spill, mix a drop of mild clear detergent into a bowl of water. Test at an inconspicuous edge and dab with a fresh white cloth. Avoid bleach, enzyme product, upholstery solvent, peroxide, essential oil, alcohol and colored soap unless Sleep Number approves the exact product. Follow with a different cloth barely dampened in plain water to lift detergent.
Step 6: Blot the treated area dry
Press dry white towels onto the damp zone without twisting the cover. Replace them until little moisture transfers. Keep the mattress in its normal assembled position; do not unzip or peel back the cover to look underneath. If a wet boundary expands, stop adding water and call Sleep Number for guidance.
Step 7: Air-dry completely
Leave all bedding off and direct a room fan across—not into—the surface. Keep the room ventilated and wait until the fabric feels dry, cool dampness is gone and there is no odor of retained moisture. Do not use a hair dryer, iron, heated blanket or steam cleaner. Heat and hidden dampness can affect foam, adhesives, cover fit and electronics.
Step 8: Do not apply stain guard
Sleep Number specifically advises against stain-guard or fabric-protector treatments because they may yellow the fabric. Protection should come from a compatible washable mattress protector, not a sprayed coating. Clean the protector according to its separate label and reinstall it only when both protector and mattress are fully dry.
Step 9: Reconnect and monitor
When the mattress, floor and power areas are dry, replace clean bedding and reconnect the system. Confirm that firmness adjustment and smart features operate normally.
