Step 1: Take the toy away and inspect it

Keep the dog away from the cleaning area and inspect the seams, fabric, and belly-pocket closure before starting. Snuggle Puppy is a comfort aid, not a chew toy. If the pet has opened a seam or can reach the internal components, remove the toy from use rather than washing it and returning it immediately. Check that the heat pack is intact and nothing is missing. Suspected ingestion of pack contents or another component calls for prompt veterinary advice, not a cleaning experiment.

Step 2: Remove both internal items

Open the underside pocket and take out the heartbeat and heat pack. Switch the heart off using its own instructions; the original Real-Feel and newer motion-activated SmartBeat units have different operating behavior. Check the pocket by hand and sight so a second item is not left behind in the stuffing area. Keep the heart dry and away from the wash basin. Dispose of a spent heat pack as directed, somewhere the dog cannot retrieve it; do not wash or microwave it to make it reusable.

Step 3: Lift loose residue from the plush

Remove loose hair and any solid surface debris before the plush enters the washer. For a small dirty area, blot with a clean damp cloth rather than grinding residue further into the pile. Avoid an unapproved solvent, fragranced deodorizer, essential oil, or strong disinfectant as a stain treatment. The manufacturer's routine method is mild detergent and a gentle wash. If the toy has a contamination problem that needs more than normal laundering, ask for a compatible treatment or replace the plush rather than guessing at a harsher recipe.

Step 4: Protect the pocket closure during washing

Clear lint or hair from the accessible hook-and-loop closure with your fingers and fasten the empty pocket for washing. Make sure no hard electronic piece remains inside. Use the sewn-in label for any temperature limits and the manufacturer's gentle-cycle instruction. Do not add fabric softener: the official FAQ warns it can weaken the pocket closure. A closure that appears clean but no longer holds securely is a safety concern because it guards access to the heart and heat pack.

Step 5: Machine-wash the plush with mild detergent

Wash on a gentle cycle using the detergent amount appropriate for the load, avoiding an excessive dose that is difficult to rinse from the filling. Do not transfer the care instructions for the SmartBeat bed to this toy; the bed's low-tumble permission does not override the plush's air-drying instructions. Check the washed toy for residual suds or a slippery feel and rinse again if necessary. A fragrance is not evidence that soiling was removed, and masking an odor does not fix retained moisture.

Step 6: Air-dry all the way into the pocket

Set the plush on a clean drying surface with the pocket open so air can reach the inner area. Turn it periodically to expose the underside, without placing it on a radiator or using a heated dryer as a shortcut. Feel the pocket and thicker areas of filling before declaring it dry; the outer fur may dry first. Keep the heartbeat out until no dampness remains. If a musty smell develops during drying, recheck cleanliness and moisture rather than adding a new heat pack to warm the toy.

Step 7: Reassemble only if the plush remains secure

Inspect the clean seams and closure again. Test the dry heartbeat separately according to its instructions, then place the appropriate components back into the fully dry pocket and fasten it completely. A replacement plush is available as a separate component, so a damaged body need not be disguised with an unsafe repair. Supervise the next introduction to the pet. Remove the toy again if chewing or attempts to open the pocket resume.
