How to Clean a SodaStream Terra and Bottles
A SodaStream Terra itself needs only careful exterior and nozzle-area wiping, while the reusable carbonating bottle has strict heat rules determined by its markings. Older plastic bottles that are not labeled dishwasher safe must be rinsed only with cold or lukewarm water and kept below 50°C/120°F. Dishwasher-safe plastic bottles tolerate the labeled dishwasher method but still have a higher-temperature limit, and glass carafes are compatible only with machines designed for them. The Terra's cylinder compartment, carbonation mechanism, and electrical-free internal valve assembly should not be immersed. Always check the bottle label, expiration date, and compatibility before cleaning or carbonating.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Remove the bottle and inspect it
Take the bottle out of the Terra and remove its cap. Read the base and label for dishwasher status, heat limit, expiration date, and machine compatibility. Do not use a cracked, deformed, deeply scratched, or expired plastic carbonating bottle under pressure, even if it can still hold water.
Step 2: Separate bottle rules by marking
A plastic bottle not marked dishwasher safe should be washed only with cold or lukewarm water and kept below 50°C/120°F. SodaStream says never put it in a dishwasher or use hot water. A dishwasher-safe bottle may use the dishwasher method or cold/lukewarm hand washing and has its own labeled limit, commonly 70°C/158°F.
Step 3: Hand-wash the bottle
Add lukewarm water and a small amount of mild liquid dish soap. Use a soft bottle brush that does not scratch plastic, paying attention to the shoulder and bottom. Rinse repeatedly until no bubbles or scent remains. Avoid bleach, chlorine cleaner, abrasive powder, boiling water, and sharp tools.
Step 4: Use the dishwasher only when approved
For a bottle explicitly marked dishwasher safe, follow SodaStream's rack-placement guidance and keep it away from an exposed heating element. Do not force the bottle over multiple prongs in a way that deforms its mouth. The cap can have separate instructions, so place it securely only when permitted.
Step 5: Wash the cap and threads
Hand-wash the cap with mild soap and use a soft toothbrush around its threads and inner sealing surface. Rinse and inspect for damage. Do not enlarge or pick at a seal with metal. A cap that no longer closes correctly should be replaced rather than tightened with excessive force.
Step 6: Wipe the Terra body
Ensure no bottle is installed and wipe the machine with a soft damp cloth. Apply water to the cloth, not the Terra. Do not immerse the machine, rinse it under a faucet, or spray cleaner into the bottle mount, carbonation tube, button, rear cylinder compartment, or base seams.
Step 7: Clean around the carbonation tube
Use a barely damp soft cloth around the accessible tube and bottle-rest area, without bending, pulling, or inserting anything into the nozzle. Sticky syrup should not normally be present because Terra bottles are designed to carbonate plain water only. Extensive residue inside the mechanism requires SodaStream support guidance.
Step 8: Drain and air-dry
Shake excess water from the bottle and place it on a rack with airflow. SodaStream warns against leaving a bottle face-down flat on a countertop for long periods because trapped moisture cannot escape. Dry the cap separately and wipe the Terra until no moisture remains around the mount.
Step 9: Recheck before carbonating
Inspect the dry bottle for heat distortion, cracks, clouding, deep scratches, odor, and expiration. Confirm the cap and mount are clean and the carbonation tube is straight. Carbonate only cold plain water in a compatible, in-date bottle; flavoring before carbonation can force sticky liquid into the Terra.
