Step 1: Confirm which Sophie product you have

Look for the classic soft rubber giraffe with its squeaker opening, rather than a plush toy, ring teether or wooden activity toy. Those products need their own care instructions. The official US Sophie site identifies Calisson Toys as its distributor and gives the classic toy's water restrictions. Do not rely on the shared character name to choose a dishwasher or sterilizing method. Keep the product packaging or identifying details available if you need help distinguishing an older item.

Step 2: Inspect before you add any moisture

Check the legs, neck, surface and opening for splits, fragility or deterioration. Calisson's care FAQ calls for inspection before use, especially once the child has teeth, and withdrawal at signs of deterioration. Cleaning is not a way to repair a split or make an unknown secondhand teether suitable for another child. If the toy is damaged or its condition is uncertain, set it aside instead of continuing because the surface stain appears removable.

Step 3: Use a damp cloth and protect the opening

Moisten a soft cloth with mild soapy water and wring it out so it is damp rather than dripping. Cover the squeaker opening while wiping, as the US care guidance advises. Clean the exterior deliberately, turning the toy in your hand to reach the feet, neck and recessed surface areas. Do not hold it under the faucet. Keeping the water on the cloth gives you control over where it goes and avoids filling a hollow part you cannot inspect or dry directly.

Step 4: Lift residue gently without scraping the rubber

Use a clean section of the cloth as soil transfers. For a small patch, repeat gentle wiping rather than using an abrasive pad or scratching with a fingernail. Remove remaining soap with another lightly damp clean cloth while continuing to protect the opening. Do not introduce a brush or swab through the squeaker hole. The job is to clean the reachable exterior, not to enlarge the opening or create access to the interior with household tools.

If a situation needs more than the approved exterior method, stop using the toy and ask the distributor about replacement.

Step 6: Air-dry away from heat and assess any interior concern

Let the wiped toy dry in a clean open place away from direct sunlight and heat sources. Do not use an oven, radiator or hair dryer to compensate for accidental immersion. If water has entered the toy, a musty odor persists or suspicious residue emerges from the opening, remove it from use while seeking manufacturer advice. Exterior wiping cannot establish that an inaccessible interior is clean. Likewise, a lack of visible material at the hole is not proof of what is or is not inside.
