How to Clean a Sunbrella Boat Cover and Marine Canvas
Sunbrella marine canvas resists life on the water, but salt, pollen, bird residue and dirt can hold moisture and support mildew on the contamination even though the fabric itself does not promote mildew growth. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Verify fabric and vulnerable components
Confirm the cover or enclosure is Sunbrella, not a look-alike acrylic or vinyl-coated textile. Identify Sunbrella Plus coated backing, clear vinyl windows, zippers, thread, snaps, labels and adjacent upholstery. Bleach permission applies to Sunbrella fiber, not automatically to everything sewn or installed with it. Check for rotten thread, torn panels and leaking seams before washing.
Step 2: Choose a safe cleaning location
Clean while installed or remove the canvas dockside if its size and hardware allow. Work away from open water when chemical runoff could enter it. Sunbrella specifically advises environmental caution with bleach and does not recommend bleach when surrounded by water or another sensitive environment. Support the fabric so dirty solution does not pool in a sag.
Step 3: Brush off loose dirt
With the fabric dry, sweep pollen, leaves, salt crystals and sand from top to bottom using a soft brush. Clean beneath hems and around hardware without snagging thread. Vacuum only with low suction if necessary. Dry soil removal reduces the soap required and keeps grit from abrading clear windows or gelcoat during the rinse.
Step 4: Hose and apply mild-soap solution
Use gentle water to wet the canvas, then apply clean water mixed with mild soap or Sunbrella's approved multipurpose fabric cleaner. Let solution soak into the fabric as Sunbrella directs. Agitate with a sponge or soft brush, concentrating on soil rather than grinding the whole surface. Keep ordinary soap solution from drying in sun before rinsing.
Step 5: Rinse completely and air-dry
Rinse until no foam or slick feel remains at seams, folds or underside. Sunbrella says to remove all soap residue and air-dry. Do not use a clothes dryer, heat gun or fold the cover damp. Check both faces and hardware pockets; trapped moisture promotes odor and mildew on remaining dirt even when the exposed face seems dry.
Step 6: Treat stubborn mildew with the exact formula
Only after routine cleaning fails, mix one cup bleach and one-quarter cup mild soap per gallon of clean water, or use Sunbrella Renew as directed. Protect glass, paint, non-Sunbrella textiles, vegetation and hardware. Allow up to 15 minutes, then blot with a sponge or clean towel. Do not scrub the coated back of Sunbrella Plus.
Step 7: Handle the Sunbrella Plus coated side gently
Sunbrella says the coated underside should only be sprayed with the recommended bleach solution and rinsed thoroughly; avoid the blotting step on that side. Do not crease, abrade or scrape the coating. If the backing is flaking, sticky or separating, stop and consult the fabricator because cleaning cannot restore a failed waterproof coating.
Step 8: Absorb oil before general washing
For a fresh oil-based spill, Sunbrella directs immediate cornstarch application. Let it sit about 10 minutes, then lift excess with a straight edge or ruler instead of pressing it deeper. Follow with the general wash; use Sunbrella's oil-stain product or an allowed strong degreaser only for a remaining spot, and rinse thoroughly.
Step 9: Retreatment and storage
After repeated thorough cleaning or long exposure, water repellency may benefit from Sunbrella's recommended retreatment. Apply only to clean, completely air-dry fabric in a ventilated area and follow the container. Let it cure before folding or rain exposure. Store the cover clean and dry with ventilation, and repair weak thread or hardware before the next high-wind use.
