How to Clean Tesla Cameras Without Scratching Them
Tesla cameras sit at the windshield, pillars, fenders, front fascia and rear license-plate area, with exact locations varying by model and year. A smear or obstruction can degrade camera views and temporarily limit driver-assistance features, but rubbing road grit directly across an exposed lens can scratch it. Tesla's guidance is therefore model-sensitive: inspect every camera before driving, remove loose contamination with water before contact where the cleaning instruction allows, avoid high-pressure spray and sharp or abrasive tools, and treat moisture inside an enclosure as condensation—not surface dirt. This guide covers accessible exterior camera windows; do not open camera housings or clean behind the windshield camera enclosure.

Quick reference
- Before contact
- Locate every camera and inspect for loose grit, damage and internal condensation.
- Grit removal
- Use plain water and gentle spray where the exact Tesla manual directs.
- Drying
- Wipe only after particles are gone and only when the model-specific instruction permits it.
- Never use
- Pressure washer, scraper, pin, abrasive brush, polish, solvent or hot water on ice.
- Service when
- A housing is cracked, internally wet, persistently hazy, shifted or still reporting faults.
What you will need
- The current on-screen Tesla owner's manual for the exact vehicle
- Clean spray bottle with plain water
- Gentle low-pressure rinse water where permitted
- Several clean, plush microfiber cloths
- Manual air blower for loose dry dust if the manual permits
- Flashlight for inspecting each camera window
- Clean towel for nearby bodywork
- Access to Tesla service if an enclosure is damaged or internally hazy
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify the exact camera layout
Open the current owner manual from the vehicle touchscreen and locate every camera for that model, year and hardware generation. Model Y guidance, for example, shows cameras at the front fascia, rear plate, door pillars, windshield and front fenders. Newer vehicles can add a front camera with a washer. Do not assume the Cybertruck or another Tesla uses the same lens material, washer or wiping permission.
Step 2: Park safely and let surfaces cool
Park in shade, select Park and stop any automated movement. Do not clean while the vehicle is moving or while a camera view is needed for maneuvering. Let sun-heated glass and body panels cool before adding water. Inspect for a cracked lens cover, loose trim or impact damage; external cleaning is not appropriate when the enclosure is physically compromised.
Step 3: Inspect before touching a lens
Use indirect light to distinguish dust, dried spray, insects, road salt, snow and condensation behind the window. Tesla warns that dirt and obstructions can affect camera performance. If visible particles are present, do not start with a dry cloth. A cloth can drag grit across the optical surface and create fine scratches that remain after the dirt is gone.
Step 4: Flush loose grit with plain water
For an exposed lens covered by the Tesla cleaning instruction, spray plain water from a clean bottle so grit releases and runs away. Tesla's older cleaning guidance specifically says to spray water onto the lens and not rub accumulated dirt with hands or a cloth. Keep the stream gentle. Do not aim a pressure washer at a camera, force water into trim seams or use a sharp object to dislodge debris.
Step 5: Use the built-in washer only where fitted
If the exact vehicle has a front-camera sprayer, operate it according to the manual and confirm the nozzle is not frozen or obstructed. A built-in washer does not authorize spraying cleaner into every camera opening. Refill only with the windshield washer fluid Tesla permits for the climate and vehicle. Never insert a pin into a camera nozzle unless the service instruction explicitly calls for it.
Step 6: Dry only after particles are gone
Once water has carried away visible grit, follow the current model's direction on drying. If careful microfiber drying is permitted, use a clean plush cloth with almost no pressure and one pass per clean cloth face. Blot or glide across the window rather than polishing in circles. If the exact manual says not to wipe an exposed lens, allow it to air-dry instead.
Step 7: Remove snow and ice without scraping
Use vehicle preconditioning and gentle snow removal around the camera area. Do not chip ice with a scraper, fingernail or hard brush and do not pour hot water on cold glass or bodywork. Keep stickers, wax buildup and accessories away from camera fields. If ice persists, allow the vehicle and environment to thaw it without striking the enclosure.
Step 8: Handle internal condensation correctly
Condensation inside an enclosure will not wipe off from outside. Tesla notes that it can occur in cold or wet conditions and suggests warming/preconditioning the cabin, using the windshield defroster and directing front vents toward door pillars where applicable. Do not pry open a housing. Persistent moisture, droplets, staining or a blocked-camera alert after conditions normalize requires Tesla service.
Step 9: Verify every view before driving
Inspect all camera windows again and use the Camera app or current visibility summary where available. A clean-looking lens can still have a thin smear, so check the image as well as the surface. Driver-assistance systems never replace direct visual checks. If a warning remains, a view is hazy or a camera appears shifted, do not attempt calibration as a substitute for cleaning or physical repair.
