How to Clean Thermador Star Burners
Thermador Star burners are easiest to clean when you separate the removable caps and grates from the fixed bases and igniters. Those parts do not all tolerate the same amount of water or the same cleaner. The goal is to remove food and grease while preserving the burner openings and restoring correct cap alignment. This guide covers gas cooktop and rangetop burner care, not an oven self-clean cycle, griddle seasoning or internal gas-system work. Begin with the appliance model so any special surface or component instructions remain clear.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Turn the controls off and let every part cool
Remove cookware and wait until the grates, caps and bases are completely cool. Confirm every burner knob is off and follow the model’s power-disconnection instructions before maintenance. Do not confuse a still-warm surface with one ready for wet cleaning. Thermador’s gas-cooktop care guide distinguishes stainless, porcelain and painted surfaces, so identify what surrounds your burners. Keep towels and supplies away from any other burner in use. There is no need to dismantle the gas connection for ordinary surface cleaning.
Step 2: Lift off the grates and keep caps matched to their bases
Carefully lift the heavy cooled grates and place them on a protected surface rather than sliding them across the cooktop. Remove only the burner caps designated as removable in the manual. Arrange them in a layout that preserves their original positions, especially when burners differ in size. Note the alignment tabs and notches before washing. Leave fixed burner bases and igniter assemblies attached. A removable-looking screw or port is not an invitation to disassemble the burner’s gas passages for a deeper cleaning.
Step 3: Wash the caps without leaving them to soak
Clean the caps with hot soapy water and a soft cloth, or another compatible nonabrasive liquid cleaner allowed by Thermador. The manufacturer specifically says not to soak the caps. Work on attached food with gentle repeated wiping rather than an overnight bath or harsh scraping. Rinse and dry them thoroughly, including the underside and locating features. Check for damage while they are off the appliance. A rusted, chipped or distorted component may need replacement; cleaning should not be used to disguise a part that no longer seats properly.
Step 4: Clean bases and ports with controlled moisture
Use hot water, mild detergent and a soft cloth on the cooled fixed burner bases. Thermador recommends a stiff nylon toothbrush for the port openings, without scratching or gouging them. Brush accessible deposits away rather than enlarging an opening with a drill, wire or sharp metal point. Remove soap with a clean damp cloth and dry. Keep water out of the appliance interior and avoid flooding the burner. Persistent blocked or damaged passages require a model-specific assessment, not increasingly forceful scraping.
Step 5: Wipe igniters gently and remove stray fibers
Once cool, clean an igniter using a cotton swab only lightly dampened with water. Thermador also permits gently lifting soil with a toothpick. Work on the visible dirty surface without bending the electrode, levering against ceramic or filling the area with liquid. Remove any cotton fibers left behind and let the area dry completely. Do not test ignition with a wet igniter just to speed the process. If an igniter is cracked or otherwise damaged, repeated wiping cannot restore its original condition.
Step 6: Clean the grates and surrounding finish by material
Wash grates using a mild cleaner and soft cloth, then rinse and dry. Do not put them through an oven self-clean cycle. For stainless surfaces, wipe with the grain using mild soapy water, remove residue and dry; keep chlorine-containing or abrasive cleaners off the stainless. For cooled porcelain or painted areas, use the relevant gentle method from the care guide. Clean spills as soon as safely practical, especially sugary or acidic food, but do not apply a wet cloth to hot porcelain. Avoid polishing over control labels.
Step 7: Seat dry caps correctly and check the flame pattern
Return each fully dry cap to its matching base, aligning its tabs with the corresponding notches so it sits correctly rather than tilted. Refit the grates and restore power if it was disconnected. Use the normal lighting procedure after the work area is clear. Thermador’s troubleshooting guide identifies displaced caps and wet or dirty igniters as possible causes of problems after cleaning. If ignition or flame shape remains abnormal, turn the burner off and reassess rather than holding gas on to test it repeatedly.
