How to Clean a Tonal Home Gym and Accessories
Tonal's official maintenance routine pairs cleaning with a safety inspection because sweat lands near moving arms, Smart Accessory straps and load-bearing cables. Tonal recommends a two-pass surface process—an ammonia-free cleaner followed by a bleach-free disinfectant—while specifically excluding chemicals from the cables and greased gears. The touchscreen also has a temporary Screen Cleaning mode that prevents accidental taps. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Unload, stow and inspect the area
Turn the weight off, remove loose accessories and stow both arms. Tonal recommends stowing after each use so the tracks and locks reset to a known position. Vacuum the floor beneath the trainer. Do not lean equipment against the arms or clean while a cable is supporting weight.
Step 2: Activate Screen Cleaning mode
Pull down the menu at the top of the Tonal display, tap the Tonal icon and select Screen Cleaning. The mode holds the touch interface for about 20 seconds and can be dismissed by pressing and holding when finished. Work in small sections rather than flooding the screen to beat the timer.
Step 3: Use Tonal's two-pass surface method
Put ammonia-free cleaner on a microfiber cloth and wipe the screen bezel, trainer face and other solid surfaces. Follow with a separate cloth carrying a bleach-free disinfectant. Respect the disinfectant label's contact time, then remove residue if its directions require it. Never spray the mounted trainer or let liquid run behind the screen.
Step 4: Clean the bench and solid accessories
Wipe the bench upholstery, bar, rope end components and plastic or metal portions of the Smart Handles using the same compatible two-pass method. Use little enough liquid that it cannot enter buttons, seams or attachment points. Dry high-grip surfaces so cleaner residue does not make the bench, bar or handles slippery.
Step 5: Keep chemicals off the cables and gears
Tonal explicitly says never to put chemicals on its cables and not to clean greased gears. If an exposed cable has ordinary dust, use only a clean dry cloth with almost no pressure. Do not pinch the cable, scrub it, apply silicone, remove factory grease or push a cloth into the arm mechanism.
Step 6: Inspect the entire cable length
At the monthly or ten-use inspection, set the weight to 5 pounds and move an arm to the highest track position. Examine the visible cable, then use 15 pounds in Free Lift mode with a Smart Handle to extend the cable under control and view the full length. Repeat on the other side without letting a cable snap back.
Step 7: Judge wear and alignment before reuse
Compare wear with Tonal's official levels. The cable should remain centered and parallel between the track bolts. If wear reaches Tonal's stop-use levels or white core is exposed, stop using the trainer and contact Tonal. Do not trim fibers, rotate a cable, cover damage or attempt an in-wall or arm repair.
Step 8: Check arms, buttons and straps
Move each arm through at least three height, angle and rotation positions and press it to confirm each lock holds. Toggle weight with each Smart Accessory button and inspect the nylon handle and bar straps. A worn strap, arm that moves while locked, rust or large weathering mark needs support assessment.
Step 9: Dry and return Tonal to service
Let disinfected surfaces dry for the product's required contact time, then wipe away any slippery residue. Reattach accessories one at a time, confirm their T-locks seat correctly and return Tonal to Sleep Mode rather than routinely cutting power; Tonal uses sleep for background updates. Perform a low-weight test before a normal workout.
