How to Clean a Tractive GPS Tracker After Mud or Salt Water
Tractive GPS trackers are designed to withstand water and dust, but waterproof does not mean salt, sand and mud should dry on the charging area. Tractive advises a fresh-water rinse after ocean swimming and a tap-water rinse after muddy activity, followed by soft wiping and air drying. A blue charging light can indicate moisture in the charging port and triggers a longer drying routine. This guide covers the tracker body; the pet’s collar or harness retains its own material-specific care instructions.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Remove the tracker and inspect its condition
Take the tracker off the pet and detach it from the collar clip according to the model instructions. Check the housing, charging cover or contacts, clip and buttons for cracks, deep bite damage or a loose seal. Do not rinse a physically compromised device on the assumption that it remains waterproof. Keep the charger disconnected and away from the sink. The collar, fabric holder and tracker may have different cleaning permissions, so separate them before adding water.
Step 2: Brush off loose dry grit first
If thick mud has dried, lift loose chunks with fingers or a soft brush without scratching the housing or packing material into the charging port. Remove hair from the clip and contact area. This dry step reduces the amount of grit moved across the device during rinsing. Do not pry open seams, insert pins into a port or use compressed air that could drive particles inward. A damaged cover or missing closure requires model-specific support before water exposure.
Step 3: Rinse after mud with fresh tap water
Tractive describes its trackers as dust-tight and directs users to rinse away mud and dirt with tap water. Use a gentle stream and rotate the tracker so contamination leaves openings rather than collecting at an edge. Wipe with a soft cloth and check that no dirt remains in the charging port. Do not pressure-wash it, boil it or place it in a dishwasher. Waterproof use ratings do not authorize detergents, solvents or a long chemical soak.
Step 4: Remove salt and sand after ocean use
After salt-water swimming, rinse the tracker with fresh tap water promptly. Gently wipe away salt and sand rather than letting crystals dry around contacts and seams. Repeat the fresh-water pass if grit remains, using fingers and the cloth without abrasion. The tracker can be safe in sea water while still needing this care afterward. Do not confuse rinsing the device with washing a leather or electronic collar in the same way.
Step 5: Clear the charging area without tools
Open the protective cover only as the model instructions allow and inspect for retained water or debris. Tap out loose excess water gently and dab accessible moisture with a lint-free cloth. Do not bridge contacts with metal, scrape corrosion, add contact cleaner or plug in the charging cable to see whether the port is dry. If dirt will not lift with the specified rinse and cloth, use Tractive support rather than enlarging or dismantling the port.
Step 6: Air-dry fully before charging
Place the tracker in a ventilated location and let it air-dry. If a blue light indicates water in the charging port, Tractive says to open the protective cover, tap out excess water, dab it and wait 24 hours before charging again. Avoid hair dryers, radiators, ovens and direct high heat. A dry exterior is not proof that a recessed port is ready; moisture around charging contacts can cause charging trouble.
Step 7: Reattach and verify tracking
When completely dry, inspect the clip and cover again, charge only if the port is ready, and confirm normal status in the app. Reattach the tracker in the correct orientation and ensure the clip locks securely without trapping collar fabric. Test location reporting before the next outing. Persistent charging errors, a moisture indicator after adequate drying or a cracked housing needs support. Cleaning preserves ordinary operation; it cannot restore the device’s seal after physical damage.
