How to Wash and Clean a Tumble Rug
A Tumble system has a removable washable rug cover and a separate cushioned rug pad. Only the cover belongs in the washing machine; the pad is spot-cleaned. Tumble says to remove the cover from the pad, wash it in cold water on a delicate cycle with standard detergent that contains neither bleach nor fabric softener, then tumble-dry on low or hang-dry. Correct load capacity matters even though Tumble rugs are designed to fold into many household machines: an overpacked washer may not rinse evenly, and a bunched rug can unbalance the machine. Treat spills promptly so full washing is reserved for soil that needs it.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Confirm the label, size, and machine capacity
Read the sewn care label and current Tumble instructions for the rug size. Check washer and dryer manuals for bulky-item capacity rather than assuming every 8-by-10 or 9-by-12 cover fits every machine. Use a commercial front loader when the folded cover cannot move freely. Do not force it around an agitator or wash it while attached to the pad.
Step 2: Vacuum and treat fresh spills first
Vacuum loose grit with a compatible low setting, avoiding a beater bar that grabs edges. For liquid, blot from the outside of the spill toward the center with a clean white cloth. Do not scrub dye across the design or flood through to the pad. Many spills can be removed before laundering, reducing wear and water use.
Step 3: Separate the cover from the pad
Lift the rug cover carefully and peel it from the pad in sections without stretching corners. Note the pad-piece layout and corner-pocket orientation for reassembly. Shake or vacuum the back of the cover and top of the pad. Inspect for tears, loose stitching, pet contamination, or damaged pad connections before either piece is cleaned.
Step 4: Spot-clean the rug pad only
Do not put the cushioned pad in the washer or dryer. Blot it with a lightly damp cloth and the mild pad-approved solution, keeping moisture controlled, then wipe away residue and air-dry it flat. Avoid soaking, bleach, steam, solvent, and aggressive scrubbing. A saturated pad must dry completely before it is covered to prevent odor or microbial growth.
Step 5: Load the rug cover loosely
Fold the cover according to Tumble's instructions and distribute it evenly in the drum. Wash it alone or only with permitted balancing items so zippers, hooks, and lint from other laundry cannot abrade it. If the door barely closes or the cover is tightly wedged, move to a larger machine rather than compressing it into the washer.
Step 6: Wash cold on delicate
Select cold water and a delicate cycle. Use a normal measured amount of standard mild detergent that contains no bleach and no fabric softener, as Tumble recommends. Skip chlorine, oxygen bleach unless explicitly permitted, laundry sanitizer, scent beads, softener sheets, and excess soap. Extra chemistry can affect color, spill resistance, texture, rinsing, and pad grip.
Step 7: Dry on low or hang dry
Remove the cover promptly and inspect before adding heat. Tumble permits low tumble drying or hang drying. Use only low heat and enough drum space for movement; high heat can shrink or distort the cover. For air drying, support its weight evenly and avoid clips that crease edges. The rug must be fully dry, including hems and corners, before reassembly.
Step 8: Reassemble flat and aligned
Place the clean dry pad pieces on a clean dry floor, align them as originally arranged, and position the cover using the corner pockets and edges. Smooth from the center outward without stretching. Check that no pad protrudes and the rug lies flat before walking on it. Persistent curling, delamination, dye change, torn pockets, or odor deserves Tumble support rather than another hot wash.
