Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Shut down, unplug, and cool

Step 4: Brush loosened mineral deposits

Remove the chimney and lift off the heating-element cover. Dip a soft brush in vinegar from the tray and gently scrub the heating element, cover, reservoir, and chamber. For scale that remains on the element, Vicks allows wrapping it with a vinegar-moistened paper towel for about 30 minutes or until loosened. Remove that towel completely before continuing.

Step 5: Empty and rinse descaled removable parts

Lift out the tray and discard vinegar. Rinse the tray and heating-element cover until the vinegar odor is gone. Wipe the heating element with a soft damp cloth. Do not put the powered base, heating element, or mist chimney under running water. Snap the dry cover back onto the bottom of the chimney in its correct one-way orientation.

Step 6: Mix a separate disinfecting solution

Only after the vinegar stage has been emptied and rinsed, mix one-half gallon of water with one-half teaspoon of bleach. Never use extra bleach and never mix bleach with vinegar, ammonia, or another cleaner. Pour the measured solution into the tank, replace the cap, and gently swish it around the interior.

Step 7: Disinfect for 20 minutes

Place the tank on the base so the solution drains into the water tray and let it stand for 20 minutes. Do not plug in or operate the humidifier. Remove the tank and empty it slowly into the sink, then rinse repeatedly until no bleach odor remains.

Step 8: Rinse the chimney area without flooding it

Remove the mist chimney and heating-element cover again. Rinse the removable cover, but clean the heating element and chimney with a soft damp paper towel only.
