How to Clean a Vitamix Blender and Cloudy Container
A Vitamix container normally cleans itself by blending warm water with one or two drops of dish soap, but cloudiness, odor, sticky ingredients, and residue around the lid require different follow-up methods. Vitamix says to use warm—not hot—water, run the Clean program or blend from Variable 1 to High for roughly 30–60 seconds, rinse, and air-dry the container upside down. The motor base is wiped rather than immersed. Cloudy film is often mineral buildup or food residue and can be treated with an upright vinegar soak. Container materials, dishwasher compatibility, and blade assemblies vary, so the exact manual remains controlling.

Quick reference
- Fill
- Use warm water to halfway and only one or two drops of dish soap.
- Blend
- Run Clean or ramp Variable 1 to High for about 30–60 seconds.
- Cloudiness
- Soak upright with one cup vinegar and warm water for several hours.

- Rinse fully and air-dry the container upside down with the lid separate.
What you will need
- The manual for the exact Vitamix machine and container
- Warm—not hot—water
- One or two drops of mild dish soap
- A soft nonabrasive sponge or pot scrubber
- A narrow soft brush for lid grooves
- White vinegar for mineral film
- A damp microfiber cloth for the motor base
- A dry towel
- A stable draining rack
- Optional dishwasher only for parts explicitly marked safe
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Separate routine residue from mineral cloudiness
Rinse the container soon after blending. A greasy or colored film usually needs the soap cycle, while a chalky white haze may be minerals deposited from water or produce. Inspect the blade area, lid seal, and container walls. Never reach near blades with fingers; handle and brush around them from a safe distance.
Step 2: Fill the container halfway
Add warm—not hot—water to about half capacity. Vitamix warns against hot cleaning water because the motor will add heat during blending. Add only one or two drops of dish soap. Excess soap creates foam that can climb into the lid and spill around the motor base.
Step 3: Lock the lid and run the cleaning cycle
Secure the lid and lid plug. On a model with a Clean program, select it and start; the machine will stop automatically. Without that program, start at Variable 1, increase gradually to Variable 10, switch to High, and run for about 30–60 seconds as Vitamix directs. Keep the machine stable and attended.
Step 4: Rinse and drain upside down
Pour out the soapy water, rinse the walls and blade area thoroughly with warm water, and check for slick residue. Place the container upside down on a rack that allows air underneath. Do not seal a damp lid onto it, which traps odor and moisture.
Step 5: Hand-clean the lid, plug, and tamper
Wash removable parts with warm soapy water and a soft sponge unless their exact instructions permit a dishwasher. Brush lid grooves and gasket areas gently. Never place the tamper into a running machine without the correct lid installed, and do not assume all legacy lids or blade containers are dishwasher safe.
Step 6: Lift stubborn food without blade contact
Repeat the warm soap cycle for sticky mixtures. With the container removed from the base, use a soft pot scrubber on reachable walls. Avoid knives, metal brushes, abrasive powder, and forcing a sponge beneath blades. If movement, leakage, unusual noise, or a damaged blade assembly is present, stop and use Vitamix service guidance.
Step 7: Treat a cloudy container with vinegar
Vitamix recommends pouring about one cup of white vinegar into the container, filling it halfway with warm water, and letting it stand upright for several hours. Pour it out, use a soft nonabrasive scrubber on the walls, rinse thoroughly, and run a normal soap cycle. Do not run the blender for hours or lay a filled container on its side.
Step 8: Wipe the motor base
Unplug the machine and use a well-wrung damp cloth on the controls, centering pad, exterior, and cord. Lift loose crumbs without pushing them into drive or ventilation openings. Never immerse the base, rinse it under a faucet, spray cleaner onto it, or use liquid around the drive socket.
Step 9: Dry and inspect before storage
Let the container, lid, plug, and tamper dry completely. Check the container for cracks, crazing, leaks, and unusual blade resistance. Store the lid loose or separate for airflow. Cloudiness that remains after a vinegar soak may be permanent scratching or etching rather than removable mineral film.
