How to Clean a Vornado 660 Whole Room Air Circulator
The Vornado 660's detachable inlet grille gives access to the blades, but the motor and fan body must stay dry. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Unplug and choose a stable work surface
Turn the 660 off, unplug it, and wait for the blade to stop. Place it on a table or floor where the head cannot roll while the grille is removed. Never clean through the grille with the fan powered, and do not use the speed control as a substitute for unplugging.
Step 2: Vacuum loose dust before opening
Use low suction and a soft brush over the inlet ribs, front spiral grille, base, and rear seams. Removing surface dust first keeps it from dropping into the motor area. Keep hard vacuum nozzles from striking the plastic and avoid compressed air, which can drive debris deeper into bearings and switches.
Step 3: Remove the inlet grille correctly
Follow the 660 owner guide for the retaining screw and grille tabs used by your revision. Support the grille as the screw is removed, release the tabs without prying them with a metal tool, and lift the grille away. Put the screw in a container. Stop if the grille will not release; forcing it can crack a tab or distort the guard.
Step 4: Dust the blades without bending them
Hold the blade assembly still with one hand away from sharp edges and use a soft brush or vacuum brush on each blade face and the accessible hub. Work from the center outward so debris does not fall toward the motor shaft. Do not remove the blade or motor cover unless the exact guide instructs owner removal.
Step 5: Wipe stubborn film sparingly
For a film that dry brushing does not lift, wipe the blade and accessible plastic with a microfiber cloth dampened with plain water and wrung nearly dry. Apply water to the cloth, never the fan. Step 6: Clean the detached grille
Vacuum both sides of the grille and wipe its ribs with a damp cloth. Do not place it in a dishwasher or soak it unless the 660 manual explicitly permits that method; heat and force can warp plastic. Dry the grille completely, particularly around the screw hole and clips.
Step 7: Inspect the cord, blade, and grille
Look for a frayed cord, cracked blade, loose hub, damaged guard, or debris wrapped around the shaft. Cleaning cannot safely repair those conditions. If the blade is cracked, the cord is damaged, or the motor shows heat discoloration, leave the fan unplugged and contact Vornado support.
Step 8: Reinstall the guard and test
Engage every grille tab in the order shown by the guide, reinstall the retaining screw snugly without overtightening, and confirm the guard is even all around. Rotate the blade gently by hand to ensure it does not touch the grille. Plug in only when all parts are dry and secure, then test at low speed before normal operation.
