Step 1: Turn off the range and prepare the microwave

Let the microwave and the cooking surface below it cool. Disconnect microwave power before removing filters or wiping, and keep the range off while working above it. Identify the removable turntable, support, underside grease filters and, if fitted for recirculation, charcoal filter. Use the manual rather than assuming every Whirlpool vent grille has the same screws. Protect the cooled surface below from falling parts. Do not remove the microwave from its mounting or open the outer electrical cabinet to reach a dirty-looking area.

Step 2: Lift out the turntable and loose food

Remove the cooled turntable and its removable support as instructed, keeping their orientation in mind for reassembly. Pick up crumbs and loose food from the cavity floor. Whirlpool’s turntable guidance recommends mild soap and water and makes dishwasher use dependent on the owner’s manual. Let hot glass cool before washing it. Clean the support’s accessible areas too, but leave a fixed drive coupling in place unless the manual designates it as removable.

Step 3: Clean the cavity and door-contact surfaces gently

Wash the walls, ceiling and floor using mild soapy water on a soft cloth or sponge, following Whirlpool’s cavity-care instructions. Include the area where the door meets the frame and accessible rack supports. Gently wipe the microwave inlet cover; it is not a removable grease filter. Soften stuck food with a damp cloth rather than scraping with metal. Remove soap with a clean damp cloth and dry. Burned, damaged or peeling parts are not repaired by scrubbing harder.

Step 4: Remove and wash only the metal grease filters

Find the underside filters and follow the model’s release direction. The Whirlpool filter guide describes sliding a filter away from its tab before lowering it on the illustrated design. Wash with mild soap and warm water, using gentle brushing to lift grease without bending the mesh. Dishwasher cleaning is permitted for many, but not all, filters; verify the manual first. Avoid a harsh oven-cleaner bath or an improvised chemical treatment intended for another metal.

Step 5: Replace the charcoal filter when required

If your installation uses a charcoal filter, identify the correct replacement part before opening its owner-access grille. Charcoal media is replaced, not washed or regenerated by drying in an oven. Whirlpool’s general support schedule is approximately six months or the filter-status prompt, but follow the model and use conditions. Remove only the specified grille and retain its screws. Fit the new filter in the indicated position and orientation, then secure the grille. Do not convert a filter change into fan or electrical-compartment disassembly.

Step 6: Wipe exterior surfaces and reinstall dry parts

Clean the handle, door exterior and control area with a soft cloth and a finish-compatible mild cleaner, keeping liquid out of seams and openings. Apply cleaner to the cloth rather than spraying into the controls. Rinse and dry the grease filters completely before reinstalling them in their tracks. Replace the cleaned turntable support and glass plate so they sit correctly on the drive arrangement. Recheck that the filter tabs and grille are secure. A loose filter or rocking plate is a reassembly issue to resolve before cooking.

Step 7: Restore power and check the completed cleanup

Reconnect power after all parts are installed and dry. Reset a filter reminder only after completing the maintenance it represents, using the model’s control instructions. Confirm the turntable is seated before normal cooking and do not test the microwave empty. If odor remains, distinguish trapped food from a spent charcoal filter or a fault. Whirlpool’s arcing guidance identifies soil buildup as one possible cause, not the explanation for every spark. Persistent sparking or visible damage needs more than another cleaning cycle.
