How to Clean XPEL Paint Protection Film
Paint protection film takes the contamination that would otherwise reach the paint, but aggressive washing can mark the film or lift an exposed edge. XPEL recommends routine washing about every two weeks or roughly 600 miles, prompt removal of insects and stains with its Film Cleaner, and a careful hand wash using a soft microfiber mitt. Touchless washing can be acceptable, while automatic brushes create avoidable contact. This guide adds the practical decision points that matter after installation: confirm cure instructions with the installer, distinguish surface contamination from an edge problem, and stop before polishing or solvent turns a cleanable mark into film damage.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Respect the installation cure period
If the film was installed recently, use the installer's exact wait time before washing or applying products. Moisture bubbles and edge appearance can change during curing. Do not press, puncture or heat a new-film bubble. Photograph a suspected installation issue and ask the installer before cleaning that area.
Step 2: Inspect edges and contamination
Park in shade and let the panels cool. Locate bugs, bird residue, sap, road film and every visible film edge. A raised or contaminated edge is not a normal scrub target. Note matte versus gloss film and any ceramic coating because finishing products must be compatible with both layers.
Step 3: Pre-rinse loose grit
Rinse top to bottom with gentle water so grit leaves before the mitt touches the film. Keep concentrated pressure away from exposed edges, seams and chipped areas. Aim runoff along an edge rather than upward beneath it. A touchless wash is safer than a rotating-brush automatic wash when hand washing is unavailable.
Step 4: Wash with clean-contact technique
Use XPEL Foam Soap or a pH-neutral wash and a clean plush mitt. A two-bucket method with grit guards keeps released dirt out of the wash solution. Work one panel at a time in straight overlapping passes, rinsing the mitt frequently and keeping the surface wet.
Step 5: Soften bugs instead of scrubbing
XPEL advises prompt bug and stain removal with its Film Cleaner. Follow the product label, apply it to a cool surface and allow only the stated dwell time. Use a soft cloth and light passes. Do not use a razor, kitchen sponge, abrasive insect pad or unverified solvent on the film.
Step 6: Treat difficult contamination selectively
For sap, tar, mineral spotting or paint transfer, first ask XPEL or the installer which chemical and process suit the exact film. Test a hidden edge when instructed. A yellow, cracked, hazy or deeply etched patch may be film degradation rather than soil; repeated solvent can worsen it.
Step 7: Rinse every seam
Flush soap and spot-cleaner residue from badges, wrapped edges and panel gaps without directing water under them. Cleaner left to dry can streak or attract dirt. Inspect the mitt and towels for lifted adhesive or film fragments; if anything appears, stop and preserve the area for installer review.
Step 8: Dry with low friction
Sheet water from the panel, then blot or glide a clean soft drying towel with minimal pressure. Safe filtered air can clear water from seams when it is not aimed beneath an edge. Avoid rough towels, water blades and high heat. Do not rub a film edge backward while drying.
Step 9: Protect and inspect
Use only a sealant or coating compatible with the specific XPEL gloss or matte film, following XPEL and installer directions. Wax containing harsh cleaner or abrasive polish is not a routine cleaning product. Check edges after drying and arrange the periodic film inspections required by the applicable warranty.
