How to Clean a YETI Hopper Soft Cooler
YETI Hopper soft coolers have a food-contact liner, insulated shell and either a watertight HydroLok zipper or, on certain M-series models, a magnetic MagShield opening. Trapped drink residue, bait, food particles or salt can cause odor, while sand in a zipper can make the closure difficult and damage its seal. YETI's Hopper instructions call for dish soap and water, a fresh-water rinse, a wiped-dry interior and several days of open air-drying. Zipper models also need rinsing after use around sand or dirt and a thin application of YETI zipper lubricant at the U-Dock and teeth. The cooler must not go in a washing machine, dryer or oven, and YETI says not to use bleach.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify the closure
Check whether the cooler has a HydroLok zipper, such as many Hopper Flip and backpack styles, or the magnetic MagShield opening used on M-series models. The body-cleaning method is similar, but zipper lubricant belongs only on the zipper system. Follow the manual for the exact closure.
Step 2: Empty and shake out debris
Remove food, ice, packaging and accessories. Pour meltwater into an appropriate drain and lift out crumbs, fish scales or sand before adding wash water. Open pockets and straps without forcing hardware. Do not leave dirty water in the cooler overnight.
Step 3: Wash the liner
Add clean water and a small amount of mild dish soap. Wipe every liner panel, corner and upper seam with a nonabrasive cloth or soft sponge. Use enough water to clean without filling the cooler to the top. Do not use bleach, abrasive powder, solvent or a stiff brush that can mark the liner.
Step 4: Clean the exterior
Use the same mild soap-and-water approach on the shell, handles, straps and pocket exterior. Work a soft brush lightly over textured dirt. Avoid soaking accessory openings and do not scrape dried mud with metal. Rinse saltwater exposure promptly to protect hardware and closure components.
Step 5: Rinse with fresh water
Remove all soap from the liner and exterior with clean fresh water. Pay attention to upper folds and seam edges where suds collect. Tip the cooler in a controlled way to drain it without straining handles. Do not put the cooler in a washing machine.
Step 6: Flush the HydroLok zipper
On a zipper-equipped Hopper, rinse the teeth, track and U-Dock with fresh water after sand, grit or salt exposure. Move debris outward with fingers or a soft brush and never force a gritty slider. Do not pry the teeth, use oil-based household lubricant or pull the slider with tools.
Step 7: Wipe the MagShield opening if equipped
On an M-series cooler, wipe the magnetic opening and its folds with soap and water, then rinse. Keep small metal debris away from the magnets and inspect the closure for trapped grit. Do not apply HydroLok zipper lubricant to a magnetic seal.
Step 8: Dry open for several days
Wipe the interior dry with a clean towel, then leave the cooler fully open in a shaded ventilated place for several days as YETI recommends. An M-series cooler can be positioned open and upside down when stable. Do not machine-dry, oven-dry, heat-gun or close a damp cooler.
Step 9: Lubricate a clean dry zipper
When a HydroLok zipper is clean and dry, apply a thin coating of YETI zipper lubricant to the front and back of the U-Dock and along the teeth. Wipe away excess and move the slider through its travel to distribute it. Lubricant is maintenance, not a substitute for removing sand.
Step 10: Inspect and store
Confirm that the liner, seams, pocket, straps and closure are dry and odor-free. Store the cooler open or loosely unzipped in a dry place where the shell is not crushed. A split liner, damaged seal or slider that remains jammed after rinsing needs YETI support rather than more force.
