Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Record the installation before moving anything

Step 2: Disconnect power without handling a wet plug
Keep hands and the floor around the receptacle dry. Unplug the primary pump by the plug, not by pulling its cord, and disconnect other basin equipment according to its manual. Verify the pump cannot start before reaching into the pit. Do not lift or suspend a submersible pump by its power cord.
Step 3: Remove the cover and clear floating debris
Open the sump cover carefully around pipes, cords and alarm wires. Scoop or vacuum leaves, gravel and loose sediment before disturbing the pump. Keep debris from entering the discharge. Step 4: Inspect the float's complete travel

Step 5: Lift only by the pump handle when necessary

Do not strain a rigid pipe, twist a check valve out of alignment or drag the electrical cord across a sharp cover edge.
Step 6: Clean the exterior and intake
Rinse loose sediment from the pump exterior with clean water and loosen visible deposits around intake openings with a soft nylon brush. Zoeller's guidance calls for checking intakes and impellers for debris, but do not dismantle the sealed motor or reach into the impeller path. Remove only accessible material with power disconnected.
Step 7: Clean the pit bottom and check discharge components
Remove sediment that could be drawn back into the intake, then inspect the discharge pipe, union and check valve for leakage, cracking or movement. Preserve the valve's flow direction and any vent-hole arrangement specified in the manual. Cleaning should not change pump elevation, tip it on debris or leave the intake blocked.
Step 8: Reinstall with full float clearance
Place the pump upright on its stable base in the photographed position, reconnect the union without forcing the pipe and route cords away from the float. Refit the cover so it does not pinch wiring. Reconnect power only after hands, plug and receptacle area are dry and the basin is clear.
Step 9: Run a controlled water test
