The manufacturer requires the unit off before removing the bottle for refilling. Do not work on a running fogger or reach into its outlet to test whether it is producing mist.
Step 2: Remove the bottle without dismantling the base
Lift out the bottle and its no-spill valve, then unscrew the valve to empty the bottle. Keep the assembly on a stable surface where it cannot tip into the sink. Check for cracking, slime, debris, or damage that would prevent a sound fit. The RF-10 manufacturer instructions distinguish the water bottle from the base and fog-output assembly. Do not remove electrical covers or treat the nozzle opening as an access point for scraping the internal disc.
Step 3: Wash and rinse the water bottle thoroughly
Use a mild dish-soap solution to wash the bottle, as Zoo Med specifies. Gently clean accessible surfaces without scratching the plastic, then rinse well until no soap remains. Let it dry when preparing it for storage. Keep it separate from kitchen dishes and use clean hands for refilling. A bottle that was only topped up repeatedly may need closer inspection around its neck. Do not mask an odor with fragrance or add essential oils, disinfectant, or detergent to operating water.
Step 4: Inspect the valve and keep electrical areas dry
Check the no-spill valve for visible debris and proper seating without forcing its mechanism or modifying the opening. Wipe accessible exterior surfaces with a soft cloth, keeping moisture away from the cord, plug, controls, and electrical openings. Do not immerse the base, place it in a dishwasher, or use a steam cleaner. If a dirty valve cannot be cleaned within the supplied instructions, ask Zoo Med about its care or replacement. Improvised disassembly can create a leak as well as a flow problem.
Step 5: Do not scrape scale from the transducer
The silver disc beneath the fog output is the ultrasonic transducer; Zoo Med explicitly says not to touch it. Its instructions also warn that hard-water minerals can accumulate there and shorten the unit's life. That does not authorize brushing the disc, prying deposits loose, or running acid through the fogger. For visible internal scale, persistent slime, or a contaminated base, stop use and ask Zoo Med for a model-approved cleaning or service method. Bottle washing alone does not establish that contaminated internal parts are clean.
Step 6: Refill with distilled water and restore normal assembly
Use fresh distilled water for the bottle, refit the no-spill valve, and seat the bottle correctly. Check that the existing hose and nozzle fittings are secure and the hose is not crushed or obviously obstructed. Keep the base outside the terrarium in the intended location, away from objects that high humidity could damage. Only restore power when the unit is correctly assembled and external electrical surfaces are dry. Set humidity controls according to the animal's care requirements, not simply for the largest visible fog cloud.
Step 7: Use symptoms to decide between refilling and service
Zoo Med's FAQ distinguishes low-water shutoff from an airflow failure. No light or intermittent cycling can involve an empty reservoir, a stuck no-spill valve, or the safety float. Fog forming in the reservoir but failing to travel through the tube can indicate a fan problem. Do not bypass the float or repeatedly run a faulty unit. If ordinary refilling and checking the assembled bottle do not resolve the issue, switch off, unplug, and contact Zoo Med with the model and exact symptom.
