Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Record the model and read its maintenance section
Find the rating label and open the corresponding Rheem manual. Confirm the unit has both isolation valves and service-port caps, identify the power or gas shutdown sequence and note the specified descaler and circulation time. Do not copy a valve diagram from a different Rheem series; condensing and non-condensing layouts can differ.
Step 2: Shut the heater down and let it cool
Stop hot-water demand, use the model's controls to turn the unit off and disconnect electrical power as directed. Follow the manual for gas handling; the heat exchanger must not fire during a flush. Wait for hot components and trapped water to cool. Photograph valves before moving them.
Step 3: Isolate the water path
Close the hot- and cold-water isolation valves in the manual's order so building water cannot flow through the heater. Remove service-port caps slowly with towels positioned below, verifying there is no unexpected pressure. Do not force a corroded valve or continue if the installation lacks proper flush ports.
Step 4: Connect the flush hoses and pump
Attach the pump outlet hose to the cold service port and the return hose from the hot service port to the bucket, matching the Rheem diagram. Tighten hose fittings enough to prevent leaks without damaging caps or valve threads. Place the submersible pump in the bucket and keep electrical connections dry and above possible spills.
Step 5: Circulate the approved descaling liquid
Add the quantity of food-grade white vinegar or approved descaler named by the exact manual or Rheem kit. Open only the service valves needed for the isolated loop, then start the pump. Circulate for the documented time while watching for leaks and maintaining enough liquid to keep the pump submerged. Do not mix vinegar with bleach, chlorine or another cleaner.
Step 6: Drain and rinse the heat exchanger
Turn off the pump before moving hoses or valves. Dispose of used solution according to its label. Reconfigure the cold service connection as the manual shows and flush the exchanger with clean water into the bucket or drain until the discharge is clear and free of descaler odor. Close service valves before removing hoses.
Step 7: Clean the cold-water inlet filter
With water isolated and pressure relieved, remove the inlet filter at the location shown in the manual. Rinse it under running water and use a soft brush on debris without enlarging the mesh. Inspect its seal, reinstall it in the correct orientation and tighten only as specified. A damaged screen or gasket should be replaced.
Step 8: Restore valve positions and check for leaks
Reinstall both service-port caps with their seals, close service valves and reopen the main cold and hot isolation valves in the Rheem sequence. Compare every handle with the starting photo. Run water through a hot fixture to purge air while checking the filter, ports and valves for drips.
Step 9: Restore energy and verify operation
Reconnect power and restore gas or controls according to the model manual. Request hot water and confirm normal ignition, temperature and flow without an error code.
