How to Wash an Arc'teryx GORE-TEX Jacket
An Arc'teryx GORE-TEX shell needs washing to remove body oils, smoke, sunscreen, and dirt that can interfere with breathability and durable water repellent performance. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Check the label and garment condition
Confirm the shell is an uninsulated washable GORE-TEX garment and read its tag. Look inside for peeling seam tape, bubbling laminate, holes, or delamination. Washing is maintenance, not a repair. Contact Arc'teryx before laundering a structurally failing piece because agitation and heat can enlarge existing damage.
Step 2: Clear detergent residue from the washer
Arc'teryx recommends running an empty rinse cycle first. Remove conventional detergent, softener, and bleach from the dispenser and drum. Residue from household laundry products can coat technical fabric. Use a front-loading washer when possible and avoid a top loader with an aggressive center agitator.
Step 3: Prepare the shell
Empty every pocket, loosen drawcords, close the main and pocket zippers, fasten hook-and-loop cuffs, and release hood adjustments that could snag. Brush away grit. For a localized mark, use the brand's stain guidance or dab diluted technical wash with a white cloth; avoid solvent stain remover and hard brushing.
Step 4: Dose technical detergent
Place the jacket in the machine with only suitable technical garments. Add Arc'teryx Nu Technical Detergent or a membrane-safe cleaner according to bottle and machine directions. Do not use powder detergent, ordinary heavy-duty detergent, fabric softener, bleach, fragrance beads, or excessive product.
Step 5: Wash at the specified temperature
Arc'teryx's GORE-TEX guide calls for medium heat—40°C/104°F—on a regular cycle, while the care label remains final. Avoid an excessively fast final spin if the label limits it. The wash removes oils that make the face fabric wet out; washing does not damage a sound membrane when done correctly.
Step 6: Double-rinse
Run a second rinse so no soap remains. Inspect cuffs, hood folds, and the hem for foam or a slick feel. Residue can reduce breathability and water beading. Support the wet garment when removing it; do not wring, twist, or lift the entire jacket by one taped seam.
Step 7: Tumble-dry to reactivate DWR
Place the clean shell in a dryer on low or medium heat as the label permits. Arc'teryx uses drying heat to reactivate the factory DWR. Check periodically so the jacket never overheats or contacts a dirty dryer interior. Do not use high heat, an iron, a radiator, or a hair dryer as a substitute.
Step 8: Test before adding new DWR
After the clean, dry jacket cools, sprinkle clean water across the shoulders and cuffs. If it beads and rolls away, no new treatment is needed. If the face fabric wets out while the membrane is otherwise sound, apply a compatible Arc'teryx DWR treatment evenly to the freshly washed garment and follow its activation instructions.
Step 9: Inspect and store dry
Check seam tape, zipper operation, hood adjustments, and the uniformity of water beading. A leak through a hole or separated seam is not solved by spray-on DWR. Store the shell completely dry, loosely hung or folded, away from solvents, sunscreen, and damp gear.
