How to Wash Darn Tough Merino Wool Socks
Darn Tough socks blend merino wool with performance fibers so they manage moisture and stretch while surviving repeated wear. The official routine is specific: turn socks inside out, machine-wash in cold water on a gentle cycle with a mild neutral-pH detergent, do not bleach, and tumble dry low or hang dry. Darn Tough also advises against fabric softener because coatings can interfere with wool and performance fibers, and its FAQ says not to dry clean. This guide covers standard merino hiking, running, work and everyday socks; specialty materials should follow their package or sewn label.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Pair, inspect and turn the socks inside out
Match pairs and look for embedded burrs, caked mud, worn heels and pulled loops. Turn each sock fully inside out as Darn Tough directs; this exposes the sweat- and skin-contact side and helps protect the face fabric. Do not yank a caught thread or shave pills with a blade near knit loops.
Step 2: Remove loose outdoor debris
Shake dry grit outdoors and pick burrs away gently. Rinse heavy mud with cool water before the washer so soil does not redeposit. For a small stain, blot with diluted mild detergent and a white cloth. Avoid stiff brushing that felts wool or stretches the cushioning zones.
Step 3: Load socks to limit friction and loss
Place the inside-out socks in a mesh bag and wash with similar soft fabrics and colors. Keep them away from hook-and-loop straps, open zippers, towels that shed heavily and sharp hardware. Do not overfill the washer; gentle movement and complete rinsing matter more than a large dose of detergent.
Step 4: Select cold water and a gentle cycle
Darn Tough's current care instructions specify cold water on gentle. A wool cycle is also appropriate when its action and temperature match the label. Hot water and aggressive agitation can shrink wool and strain elastic. Use an ordinary rinse rather than a sanitizing or steam option.
Step 5: Measure a neutral-pH detergent
Use a small amount of mild detergent, preferably one intended for wool or performance fabrics and close to neutral pH. Excess suds are difficult to rinse from thick cushioning. Do not use chlorine bleach, oxygen bleach unless the exact label permits it, fabric softener or detergent containing built-in softener.
Step 6: Rinse away all product
At cycle end, feel a sock for slickness and smell for concentrated detergent. Run an additional cold rinse if needed. Do not twist or aggressively wring wet merino; press gently so the knit retains its shape. Leaving residue can reduce comfort and attract soil.
Step 7: Tumble low or hang dry
Darn Tough permits tumble drying on low or hang drying. Choose a genuinely low-temperature cycle and remove socks promptly, or lay and hang them with airflow away from a radiator. High heat can damage wool proteins and shorten the life of nylon and spandex. Do not iron.
Step 8: Restore shape after accidental shrinkage
While a slightly shrunken sock is damp, ease the foot and cuff back toward shape without pulling hard on one section, then dry flat on a towel. Repeated stretching cannot reverse felted wool or heat-damaged elastic. Change future cycles to cold, gentle and low heat.
Step 9: Store clean and fully dry
Turn socks right-side out after drying and confirm thick heels and toes are dry. Fold pairs rather than rolling cuffs tightly over themselves, which can keep elastic stretched. Wash before seasonal storage and keep away from dampness and fabric pests. Retire or use Darn Tough's warranty process for holes rather than trying to scrub worn fibers clean.
