How to Clean a Bambu Lab A1 3D Printer

The open-frame Bambu Lab A1 exposes its build plate, X and Y motion components, Z lead screws, toolhead, cable paths, camera, fans, nozzle wiper, and purge area to room dust and filament scraps. Unlike the X1 Carbon, the A1 uses metal motion surfaces that require model-specific cleaning followed by the correct oil or grease. Applying lubricant without first removing grit creates an abrasive paste, while putting the wrong lubricant on belts, pulleys, or the build plate creates new print problems.

Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Unload, cool, switch off, and unplug

Finish the print, unload filament when toolhead access requires it, and wait until the nozzle and bed reach room temperature. Turn off and unplug the A1. Remove the build plate and place the printer on a stable surface. Do not move axes against resistance, reach near a hotend, or begin maintenance while an automatic routine can start.

Step 2: Remove scraps from the open frame

Brush filament pieces, purge waste, and dust from beneath the bed, around the Z towers, and near the toolhead. Use low suction without pulling cables, caps, or small fasteners into the vacuum. Do not use an air compressor, which can drive fragments into bearings and electronics or overspeed fans. Inspect the bed path for anything that could be crushed during movement.

Step 3: Clean the X-axis linear rail

Follow Bambu's A1 maintenance position and wipe the X-axis rail using the named cloth and cleaner. Move the toolhead only as instructed to expose the complete travel area. Remove dark contaminated oil before adding fresh Bambu-approved lubricant oil at the prescribed points. Keep alcohol and oil away from the timing belt, pulley surfaces, toolhead contacts, and build plate.

Step 4: Clean the Y-axis rails beneath the bed

Move the bed through the approved maintenance sequence and wipe both accessible Y-axis rails until the cloth no longer picks up grit. Apply the specified lubricant oil sparingly and distribute it with the controlled bed movement. Do not place fingers between the bed and frame, leave a cloth under the carriage, or allow oil to reach the magnetic bed surface.

Step 5: Service the Z lead screws

Wipe dust and discolored old grease from the Z lead screws with a lint-free cloth. Apply Bambu-approved lubricant grease in the amount and locations shown in the A1 guide, then use the maintenance movement to spread it across the working range. Remove excess. Do not substitute general-purpose spray lubricant or coat the smooth rail, belt, and screw with the same product.

Step 6: Clean the nozzle, wiper, and purge area

Remove loose purge fragments with tweezers while the printer is cool and disconnected. If bonded plastic coats the nozzle, use Bambu's supervised heated cleaning procedure and keep a brass brush clear of heater, thermistor, and fan wiring. Clean the nozzle wiper and replace it if worn or damaged. Never pull hardened plastic against a delicate cable.

Step 7: Inspect the extruder and filament path

Check the cutter, extruder entry, PTFE path, and any AMS Lite feed points for ground filament. Open covers only through Bambu's documented A1 process and prevent debris from falling deeper into the gear set. Brush gear teeth dry unless the specific guide calls for another treatment. Do not oil filament-driving teeth, sensors, PTFE tubing, or electrical contacts.

Step 8: Wipe camera, sensors, and fan grilles

Use a clean dry lens-safe cloth on the camera window and dry brushing around fan grilles, vents, and sensor surfaces. Prevent fan blades from free-spinning under suction or air. Do not spray the camera, load cell areas, toolhead, screen, or connectors. A contaminated calibration surface should be handled only through Bambu's exact model procedure.

Step 9: Clean and reseat the build plate

Handle the plate by its edges and clean it according to the exact surface type. A PEI plate may use a different routine from another Bambu surface. Dry both sides and wipe the magnetic bed so no filament strand or oil remains between them. Align the plate against its guides without scraping it across the bed.

Step 10: Run maintenance movement and a test print

Account for all tools and cloths, reinstall covers and the dry plate, reconnect power, and use Bambu's movement or calibration routine to distribute lubricant and verify travel. Reset only reminders for tasks actually completed. Print a small first-layer and motion test, stopping if noise, resistance, belt contamination, or layer shift appears.
