How to Clean a Bambu Lab X1 Carbon 3D Printer
The enclosed Bambu Lab X1 Carbon combines carbon X-axis rods, metal motion components, three Z lead screws, a CoreXY belt system, hotend, extruder, chamber camera, micro LiDAR, fans, and a removable build plate. These parts do not share one cleaning method. Bambu Lab specifically recommends isopropyl alcohol for the carbon rods and warns against lubricating them, while lead screws require approved grease after old contamination is removed. Correct placement matters more than using a large amount of cleaner or lubricant.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Unload filament, cool, and disconnect power
Finish or cancel the print, unload filament if the maintenance task requires access to the toolhead, and let the nozzle and bed return to room temperature. Turn the X1 Carbon off and unplug it before cleaning rods, fans, pulleys, sensors, or the chamber. Remove the build plate and loose printed parts. Never reach around moving axes or rely only on the touchscreen's idle state.
Step 2: Remove loose chamber debris
Use a soft brush and low-suction handheld vacuum to collect filament scraps, purge pieces, and dust from the chamber floor and rear chute. Support small parts so suction does not remove them. Do not blow debris toward the electronics, fans, LiDAR, camera, or toolhead with an air compressor. Wipe interior panels using a compatible barely damp cloth, keeping liquid out of seams.
Step 3: Clean the X-axis carbon rods with IPA
Bambu Lab directs owners to clean the carbon rods using isopropyl alcohol and a dust-free cloth. Apply IPA to the cloth rather than flooding the printer, then wipe the full accessible circumference and length while moving the toolhead only as the maintenance guide permits. Repeat with a clean section until black dust no longer transfers. Do not put lubricant, grease, or oil on carbon rods.
Step 4: Clean and lubricate the Z lead screws
Move the bed to the position specified by Bambu so all three Z lead screws are accessible. Wipe away old grease, dust, and filament particles with a clean cloth. Apply a modest, even amount of Bambu-approved lubricant grease and use the maintenance movement to distribute it. Excess grease attracts dirt, so remove blobs rather than leaving heavy ridges on the threads.
Step 5: Inspect idler pulleys, belts, and metal guides
Use Bambu's X1 idler-pulley procedure to remove accumulated dust from pulley faces and nearby belt paths without changing belt routing or tension. Wipe approved metal rods and apply lubricant only when the specific X1 maintenance page calls for it. Never contaminate belts, pulleys, carbon rods, or optical surfaces with grease, and do not loosen tensioning screws merely for routine cleaning.
Step 6: Clean the hotend and nozzle exterior
With the printer supervised, heat the hotend only to the temperature Bambu specifies for softening the loaded filament residue. Use the approved brush on the nozzle exterior while staying clear of heater and thermistor wires, then cool fully and disconnect power again. Remove the silicone sock only through its intended procedure. Do not scrape a cold nozzle aggressively or brush energized wiring.
Step 7: Clean the extruder, cutter, and nozzle wiper
Remove filament shards from the nozzle wiper, purge area, and cutter path with tweezers or a brush as shown in Bambu's guides. Open the extruder only when troubleshooting or a maintenance prompt calls for it, and follow the model-specific sequence. Keep fragments from falling deeper into the toolhead and replace a worn wiper rather than reshaping it.
Step 8: Wipe LiDAR, camera, sensors, and fans
Use a clean dry lens-safe cloth on the chamber camera and micro LiDAR windows, without spraying them. Brush exterior fan grilles and intake openings while preventing blades from overspeeding. Do not touch optical windows with a greasy cloth or use compressed air that can spin a fan or force dust behind a lens. Persistent first-layer scanning errors may require calibration after cleaning.
Step 9: Clean the build plate by its surface type
Handle the plate by its edges. Wash or wipe it according to the exact PEI, engineering, or other surface installed, because Bambu plate chemistry differs. Remove all soap if washing and dry both sides before placement. Inspect the magnetic bed and plate underside for a single filament strand that could create an uneven first layer.
Step 10: Reassemble, move axes, and reset maintenance
Remove every cloth and tool, reinstall the dry plate and covers, reconnect power, and run the maintenance movement or calibration Bambu specifies. Listen for new belt, lead-screw, or fan noise. Reset a printer maintenance reminder only after completing that exact task. Run a small first-layer test before beginning a long unattended print.
