How to Clean a Bialetti Moka Express
The aluminum Bialetti Moka Express should be cleaned, but not with the soap-and-dishwasher routine used for ordinary cookware. Bialetti says to let the Moka cool, disassemble it and rinse every component with water alone after use. Detergent can affect flavor and the aluminum surface, while the dishwasher can damage the product. Periodic care includes checking the filter-plate holes, wiping the gasket and descaling the lower chamber with water plus two teaspoons of vinegar or citric acid in a coffee-free brew cycle. Complete drying before loose reassembly helps prevent oxidation and odor.

What you will need
- Bialetti's current Moka Express cleaning instructions
- Warm running water
- A soft clean cloth
- A soft toothbrush for the filter plate
- A blunt fine tool only for a visibly blocked filter hole
- Two teaspoons of plain vinegar or citric acid for periodic descaling
- Fresh water for rinse brew cycles
- A ventilated drying rack
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Remove from heat and cool completely
After brewing, move the Moka Express from the burner and leave it until the metal and trapped liquid are fully cool. Do not run a hot aluminum pot under cold water or twist the chambers while pressure and heat remain. Keep the handle away from residual flame and wait before opening the collector lid.
Step 2: Disassemble the three main sections
Unscrew the upper collector from the lower boiler, remove the funnel and discard coffee grounds. Handle the funnel by its rim without bending it. Check that the safety valve is unobstructed from the exterior but do not dismantle or probe it. Set each cooled piece separately so grounds do not spread into threads.
Step 3: Rinse with warm water only
Bialetti instructs owners to rinse Moka Express components with water rather than detergent. Flush grounds and coffee oils from the collector, funnel and boiler under warm running water. Use fingers or a soft cloth on accessible surfaces. Do not add dish soap, degreaser, bleach or another cleaner that can alter aluminum or coffee flavor.
Step 4: Keep the Moka Express out of the dishwasher
Wash every part by hand. Bialetti says the dishwasher can damage the product and affect coffee taste. Dishwasher detergent and heat can discolor or oxidize aluminum and expose small parts to aggressive action. A darkened exterior does not justify abrasive polishing; gradual appearance change is different from harmful interior buildup.
Step 5: Check the filter plate and funnel
Inspect the holes in the upper filter plate and funnel against light. Bialetti recommends a soft toothbrush for blocked plate holes and mentions the careful tip of a needle when necessary. Work only through a visible obstruction without enlarging holes or scratching the plate. Rinse loosened particles away from both faces.
Step 6: Wipe and inspect the gasket
Remove the gasket only through the model's documented method and wipe it with a cloth soaked in water. Clean its channel and the filter plate, then inspect for hardness, cracks, deformation or coffee leakage. Reinstall in the correct order. Replace a worn gasket and plate with the correct Bialetti size rather than forcing a seal.
Step 7: Descale the lower chamber periodically
For mineral buildup, Bialetti directs filling the boiler with water and adding two teaspoons of citric acid or vinegar. Reassemble without coffee in the funnel and perform a normal brew cycle. Keep the safety valve above the water line as during ordinary use. Discard the solution after the pot has cooled.
Step 8: Rinse after descaling and run plain water
Disassemble the cooled Moka and rinse every component thoroughly under running water. Reassemble and brew fresh water without coffee to clear remaining acid, then discard it. Do not mix vinegar and citric acid or add bleach. Repeat a plain-water rinse only if odor or mineral particles remain.
Step 9: Dry fully and store loosely assembled
Wipe pieces with a clean cloth and air-dry them separately until threads, funnel and gasket channel are moisture-free. Bialetti emphasizes complete drying before reassembly to help avoid oxidation. Store the chambers loose rather than tightly sealed so air can circulate. Before the next brew, confirm the valve, gasket and filter are correctly seated.
