How to Clean a Breville Barista Express
The Breville Barista Express BES875 combines a burr grinder, espresso group, hot-water outlet, and steam circuit, so it needs more than one maintenance process. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Purge and wipe after each drink
After removing the portafilter, run a brief water flush through the group head to move loose grounds from the screen. Knock out the puck, rinse the basket and portafilter, and wipe them dry. Immediately wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth and point it over the drip tray to purge briefly. Do not wait for milk to bake onto the wand.
Step 2: Wash removable coffee-contact parts
Unplug and cool the machine. Remove the drip tray, storage tray, water tank, portafilter, and baskets. Wash only the parts approved by the manual with warm water and mild soap; rinse and dry. Keep the portafilter out of the dishwasher unless the exact manual permits it, and never immerse the machine, cord, or plug.
Step 3: Clean the group head and basket holes
Brush grounds from the group-head rim and shower screen with the machine off and cool. Hold baskets toward light and use the supplied pin on a blocked hole rather than enlarging it with a random tool. Run plain water through the reassembled group before the next shot. A dirty gasket or screen can cause leaks around the portafilter.
Step 4: Clean the steam-wand tip
If milk flow weakens, turn the machine off, cool it, and use the supplied tool to clear the tip holes. Remove the tip only as the manual shows, soak the tip in hot water if needed, rinse it, and reinstall it securely. Never use a sharp oversized needle, and do not operate steam with the tip missing.
Step 5: Clean the hopper and burr area dry
Run the grinder empty, switch off, and unplug. Unlock and remove the empty hopper and upper burr according to the manual. Brush or vacuum loose dry grounds from user-removable areas. Keep water and soap away from burrs, the grind chamber, and the motor. Reinstall the burr at its original setting and lock the hopper before adding beans.
Step 6: Run the tablet cleaning cycle when the light flashes
Insert the cleaning disc into the one-cup filter basket, add one cleaning tablet, and lock the portafilter into the group head. Empty and reinstall the drip tray and fill the tank. With the machine off, hold the 1 CUP and 2 CUP buttons while pressing POWER for about three seconds. Let the approximately five-minute cycle finish, remove the portafilter, and confirm the tablet dissolved.
Step 7: Prepare descale mode when the light is solid
Remove the water filter. Dissolve one Breville descale sachet in one liter of water and fill the tank as the BES875 manual directs. Place a large container under the group head and steam wand. Enter descale mode with the 2 CUP and POWER controls specified by the manual; do not confuse this with the three-button cleaning cycle.
Step 8: Descale and rinse all three components
Run the coffee component, steam component, and hot-water component in the order and durations shown on the display or manual. Empty the container safely, rinse the tank, fill it with fresh water, and repeat the required rinse across each component. Reinstall or replace the prepared water filter only after all cleaner is flushed and normal operation resumes.
