How to Clean a Birdfy Smart Bird Feeder
A Birdfy feeder combines a seed hopper and feeding tray with a camera, antenna, charging port, and sometimes a solar panel. That means ordinary feeder hygiene has to be balanced with protection for the electronics. These steps cover the classic Birdfy Feeder's old and new versions and explain where other models, such as Birdfy Feeder Metal, differ. Check the product name before disassembly; model-specific instructions take priority.

What you will need
- The care instructions for the exact Birdfy feeder
- A soft cleaning brush
- A long-handled bottle brush for the seed bin
- Warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap
- Clean rinse water
- Soft cloths or towels
- A dry indoor area with good airflow
Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Take the feeder down and identify its version
Remove the feeder from its wall, pole, or tree mount and place it on a stable surface. Compare it with Birdfy's support pictures or manual. On the classic old version, the antenna turns sideways and the feeding tray is removable; on the new version, the antenna unscrews and the cleaning sequence does not list a separate tray-removal step. Metal and other Birdfy models can have a removable camera, so do not force the classic feeder apart in the wrong places.
Step 2: Disconnect power accessories and protect openings
If a solar panel or charging cable is connected, disconnect it using the exact model instructions. Close the silicone charging-port covers securely before water is used near the feeder body. Inspect the covers for grit, warping, or damage that could prevent a proper seal. Birdfy's classic-feeder instructions specifically rely on these covers to keep water out of the camera during bin cleaning.
Step 3: Remove old seed and disassemble the washable parts
Discard old, damp, moldy, or clumped seed; do not mix it into a fresh refill. For the classic old version, turn the antenna 90 degrees, release and lift off the roof, unscrew the perch, then remove the feeding tray using its rear screw. For the new version, unscrew the antenna, release the roof, and unscrew the perch. Keep the small screws in a dry container.
Step 4: Brush and wash the roof, perch, and tray
Brush off loose hulls and droppings before adding water. Clean the removed roof, perch, and old-version feeding tray with the soft brush and mild soapy water, as Birdfy directs. Rinse away both debris and soap. Do not soak the antenna, charging connector, camera, or any powered accessory with the washable plastic parts.
Step 5: Scrub the seed bin without flooding the camera
Use a long-handled brush to reach the inside corners and seams of the seed bin. On the classic feeder, confirm again that every silicone charging-port cover is sealed and keep the camera area out of pooled water. Scrub with soapy water, then rinse in a controlled way. A hose blast or complete soak adds unnecessary pressure at seals and is not part of Birdfy's classic cleaning directions.
Step 6: Clean the camera window and exterior carefully
Use a clean, soft, barely damp cloth to lift dust or spots from the camera window and surrounding exterior, then dry it with another soft cloth. Avoid abrasive pads, window cleaner, solvents, and oily polish. If water appears behind the lens or a port cover will not seal, stop and let the device remain unpowered while you contact Birdfy support.
Step 7: Dry every part thoroughly
Birdfy instructs owners to dry the feeder thoroughly before reassembly and use. Shake water from crevices, blot the parts, and leave them separated in a dry, ventilated indoor location until the bin corners, screw holes, tray, roof, perch, covers, and connectors are all dry. Do not refill while moisture remains, because fresh seed can absorb it and spoil.
Step 8: Reassemble, refill, and monitor the seed
Reverse the correct disassembly sequence without overtightening plastic parts. Make sure the roof is buckled securely, the perch is fixed in its intended orientation, the antenna is protected, and any solar connection is dry before reconnection. Add only dry seed. Birdfy recommends cleaning every one to two weeks and replacing old seed every few days in humid weather, when dampness and mold can develop faster.
