How to Clean a PetSafe Smart Feed Pet Feeder
The PetSafe Smart Feed stores kibble above a motor-driven conveyor, so cleaning has to remove crumbs and food oil without wetting the powered base or trapping moisture in the dispensing path. PetSafe permits warm, soapy washing for removed components, but the crumb catcher and conveyor are not dishwasher-safe. On second-generation models, the bowl, bowl holder, lid and hopper can use the dishwasher; model instructions still control. This guide separates those parts, keeps the conveyor motor interface dry, and restores the feeder without losing sight of alignment. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Disconnect power and empty the feeder
Pause schedules in the app if appropriate, unplug the adapter and remove batteries if the manual directs. Take out the stainless bowl and holder. Release the hopper, pour usable dry kibble into a clean sealed container and discard food that is oily, damp, infested or stale. Do not tip loose crumbs through the feeder body, where they can reach the motor or power connection.
Step 2: Remove the lid, hopper and crumb catcher
Follow the model's release sequence for the lid and hopper rather than twisting against their locks. Pull out the crumb catcher and note its orientation. Brush loose particles from each dry part before washing. Second-generation dishwasher permissions do not automatically transfer to first-generation pieces, so identify the unit before deciding how to wash the bowl holder, lid or hopper.
Step 3: Release the conveyor without forcing it
Unlock and lift the conveyor assembly exactly as PetSafe illustrates. Keep track of its gate and alignment features and avoid bending the soft paddles. The conveyor and crumb catcher are specifically not dishwasher-safe. They can be washed after removal, but dishwasher heat and spray may warp the parts and prevent accurate portions or reliable movement.
Step 4: Wash the removable components
Wash the conveyor and crumb catcher by hand in warm, mild soapy water using a soft brush around paddle roots and corners. Hand-wash any component whose dishwasher status is uncertain. On a second-generation feeder, PetSafe identifies the bowl, holder, lid and hopper as dishwasher-safe; place them securely and avoid an aggressive heated cycle if the part label or manual limits heat.
Step 5: Wipe the powered base and dispense opening
Use a dry brush first around the motor interface and dispensing opening. Then wipe accessible exterior surfaces with a lightly damp cloth, keeping water out of the power jack, battery compartment, buttons and drive socket. Never immerse or spray the base. Remove greasy film through repeated controlled wiping rather than pouring cleaner into the food path or using compressed air that drives crumbs inward.
Step 6: Rinse and dry the food path completely
Rinse every hand-washed part until no suds or scent remain. Shake water from conveyor joints and hopper seams, towel the surfaces and allow long air-drying time. A visibly dry hopper can still hold droplets in its lower chute. Reassembly with hidden moisture can soften kibble, encourage odor and create a paste that jams the conveyor.
Step 7: Reinstall the conveyor, catcher and hopper
Seat the dry conveyor in its drive position without forcing the mechanism and lock it as the manual shows. Insert the crumb catcher, then fit the hopper, lid, holder and bowl. Check that the hopper is fully latched and that no cloth fiber or brush bristle remains near the gate. Do not lubricate the conveyor or coat it with household oil.
Step 8: Restore power and run a small test feed
Reconnect batteries and the adapter, restore the schedule if it was paused and add a small amount of fresh kibble. Trigger a manual feed while watching the conveyor and portion. Listen for clicking, confirm food falls cleanly into the bowl and inspect for a leak or damp clump. Only refill the full hopper after the test succeeds and the app reports the expected feeder status.
