Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Unplug before lowering the water level

Disconnect power at the wall with dry hands and lift the reservoir away before moving the fountain. Empty the bowl into a suitable drain. Never let the pump run dry during normal use, and never clean or disassemble it while the adapter remains connected.

Step 2: Disassemble the fountain by component

Step 4: Open the pump completely

Step 5: Brush pump pieces and the cavity

Use warm mild-soapy water and a small brush on the impeller, stator, faceplate, intake and internal pump cavity. Remove hair wound around the impeller and film from the shaft well. Keep the sealed cord entry intact and do not open the motor housing beyond the removable pump pieces PetSafe identifies.

Step 6: Descale with 50/50 vinegar when needed

For hard-water scale or stubborn grime, use equal parts white vinegar and water on compatible fountain and pump pieces. PetSafe's pump guidance uses a short soak before brushing. Never combine vinegar with bleach or another chemical, and never immerse the power adapter or unapproved connector.

Step 7: Rinse, dry and prepare the new filter

Rinse every washed or descaled piece until no soap, vinegar odor or loose debris remains. Air-dry parts while the cord and connector stay above the wet area. Rinse a new carbon filter under warm water for 30 seconds before placing it in the filter housing; do not wash the old filter with soap.

Step 8: Reassemble and confirm steady flow

Return the impeller, stator and faceplate to the pump, then route the cord and assemble the fountain in the manual's order. Refill before reconnecting power.
