Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Secure pets and control the door
Keep pets away from the opening and use the app or control to set the door to a locked state as the manual directs. Disconnect power only if the cleaning or troubleshooting procedure calls for it; preserve access to the home while the flap is unavailable. Never place fingers in a powered latch path or trigger an open cycle while someone is cleaning the frame.
Step 2: Inspect the flap, frame and weather seals
Check both sides for cracks, warping, loose screws, damaged weatherstrip and a displaced rain diverter. Observe whether the flap hangs squarely and reaches its closed position. Cleaning can remove grit but cannot restore a torn flap or failed seal. Photograph damaged parts and use model-approved replacements so added foam or tape does not obstruct sensors or latches.
Step 3: Remove dry debris from latch recesses
PetSafe recommends compressed air or a soft brush for the latches. Brush hair, sand and insects outward from the recesses, or use brief low-pressure air bursts as directed while protecting eyes. Do not push debris deeper with a screwdriver and do not add oil, graphite or silicone spray. Wet lubricant can attract grit and interfere with electronic locking.
Step 4: Wipe the flap and frame with controlled moisture
Use a soft cloth that is damp, not wet, on the flap and frame. Apply water or an approved mild solution to the cloth instead of spraying the installed door. Support the flap while wiping its edges so the hinges are not twisted. Keep runoff away from the control panel, battery or power area, wall cavity and lower latch openings.
Step 5: Clean the motion sensors with a damp swab
Locate the motion sensors identified in the manual and wipe each face with a clean damp cotton swab. Use a second dry swab to remove moisture and lint. Do not scratch the sensor window or cover it with polish. A nearly invisible film can affect detection, but flooding the recess creates a larger problem than the residue.

PetSafe directs owners to use dry methods on the buttons and not apply liquid or spray. Wipe the control surface with a dry microfiber cloth and use a dry soft brush around button edges. Wait until all accessible moisture is gone before restoring normal operation. Water inside the wall or control housing requires power isolation and qualified service, not repeated test cycles.
Step 8: Test sensing, movement and locking
Restore power or app settings and test the door without the pet first. Observe a complete unlock, flap movement, return and relock from both sides as the model supports. Listen for grinding and confirm the app reports the expected state. Then test with the paired pet key under supervision. If either latch fails, secure the opening and troubleshoot before leaving the pet unattended.
