How to Clean a Bissell CrossWave HydroSteam
The CrossWave HydroSteam washes, suctions, and steams in one head, so its daily cleanup must address dirty water, the brush roll, filter pleats, suction channel, spray tips, and storage tray. Bissell's official sequence begins by emptying the recovery tank before the clean-out cycle; running that cycle with a nearly full tank can cause leakage as the machine protects itself from drawing in excess water. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Empty the dirty-water tank before self-cleaning
Press the tank-release button, pull the recovery tank away, lift its lid, and pour out all wastewater. Remove stuck debris from the lid and rinse the tank. Reinstall the lid and click the tank back into the machine. Bissell warns that a nearly full dirty tank can leak during the clean-out cycle to prevent water from reaching the motor.
Step 2: Fill only to the clean-out mark
Lift off the clean-water tank, unscrew its cap, and add warm tap water no hotter than 140°F or 60°C to the Clean-Out symbol. Bissell also permits compatible leftover cleaning mixture for the cycle. Replace the cap securely and seat the tank on the back. Do not add vinegar, bleach, dish soap, or an unapproved floor cleaner.
Step 3: Run the 40-second clean-out cycle on the tray
Place the machine squarely on its storage tray and plug it into a grounded outlet. Press the clean-out button on the body. The brush roll spins while solution is dispensed and recovered through the suction channel; the official cycle takes about 40 seconds. Let it finish, then switch off if required and unplug before touching the roll or window.
Step 4: Remove the brush-roll window and roll
Press the window release and rotate the window toward you. Pull up on the brush-roll tab to lift the roll from the foot. Do not reach into the gear side while connected to power. Inspect the window edge and roll ends for hair, and keep the small drive components attached unless Bissell's service instructions say otherwise.
Step 5: Hand-wash the roll and window
Use warm water and mild detergent on the brush roll and window. Work water through the fibers, rinse out all foam, and gently wring or squeeze excess water from the roll without twisting its core. Set both parts aside to dry. The storage tray's roll holder can support drying, but ventilation matters more than simply parking a wet roll there.
Step 6: Disassemble and rinse the recovery tank
Remove the tank again, lift off the lid, and take out the debris strainer. Empty the strainer and rinse the tank with warm water. Pull the filter from the lid, open its pleats, and rinse away trapped debris. Rinse the lid as well. Do not reinstall a damp filter, which can restrict airflow and carry moisture toward the motor.
Step 7: Clean the foot, spray tips, gear, and squeegee
With the roll and window out and the cord unplugged, wipe the spray tips using a dry cloth. Remove hair wrapped around the brush-roll gear, wipe the squeegee beneath the foot, and lift debris from the suction path behind the roll and beneath the dirty-tank area. Do not pour water into the exposed powered foot.
Step 8: Dry the tank parts and filter for 24 hours
Leave the tank, lid, strainer, filter, brush roll, and window separated for 24 hours or until completely dry, matching Bissell's guidance. Shake off pooling water but do not use an oven, clothes dryer, hair dryer, or radiator. Wipe any water left in the storage tray so the base does not stand in a puddle.
Step 9: Reassemble in the correct order
Return the strainer to the recovery tank, close the dry filter and click it into the dry lid, then reinstall the lid and tank. Align the groove at the brush-roll end with the foot gear, lower the roll, and press its tab down. Engage the window's lower tabs first and tilt it toward the machine until it clicks.
Step 10: Store dry and track wear items
Wrap the cord, leave no solution in the tanks for long storage, and park the machine on its clean tray. Bissell recommends replacing brush rolls and filters about every three months or as needed, depending on use. Replace parts that remain crushed, torn, odorous, or clogged after cleaning rather than running the machine with restricted airflow.
