Step 1: Identify both components and the product generation

Read the inner pillow's label separately from the slipcover label. A replacement cover does not change the insert underneath it. Boppy's newer Nursing Pillow listing specifies a spot-clean-only pillow with a washable cover. Its Original Nursing Support instructions describe a machine-washable pillow. If the labels are missing, ask Boppy to identify the item before laundering it. Do not choose a method based only on the familiar curved shape or a seller's description.

Step 2: Separate the cover and assess the spill

Remove the cover and inspect the insert beneath the soiled area. Milk or another liquid may have passed through a seam even if most of the mark is on the cover. Blot liquid with a clean cloth instead of rubbing it across a wider section. Check for torn stitching, exposed filling or an odor coming from inside the pillow. Keep the baby away from the cleaning area. If contamination has penetrated a spot-clean-only insert, a fresh cover alone is not a satisfactory solution.

Step 3: Launder the cover using its own label

Wash the cover separately, close its zipper if directed and use the listed gentle cycle and temperature. The current newer-cover instructions specify cool water, 65–85°F or 18–30°C, with low delicate tumble drying. Original slipcovers also have their own care instructions. Use a modest amount of compatible detergent and rinse thoroughly so residue does not remain on a skin-contact surface. Apply non-chlorine bleach only when the cover label allows it. Do not transfer ironing permission from a cover to the filled pillow.

Step 4: Spot-clean a newer insert without soaking it

For an insert labeled spot clean only, treat only the affected surface with controlled moisture and a clean cloth, following its specific label. Remove residue gently and avoid saturating the filling. The product's water-resistant description does not make it suitable for immersion, a washing machine or a steam-cleaner nozzle. If the label does not specify an appropriate cleaning agent for the spill, ask Boppy before applying one. Persistent internal odor, extensive wetting or contamination beyond accessible surface cleaning may mean the insert needs replacement.

Step 5: Wash an Original insert only when confirmed

For an Original pillow whose label permits machine washing, Boppy recommends a front-loading machine, mild liquid detergent and a delicate cycle in the specified cool range. Give the pillow enough room to move rather than compressing it into an undersized drum. Wash the slipcover separately. Do not include a foam insert or another Boppy product simply because it fits in the machine. Keep the instructions tied to the exact item. If a seam is already damaged, laundering can worsen the opening and expose more filling.

Step 6: Dry thoroughly using the permitted route

An Original washable pillow's directions allow low delicate tumble drying and describe using a sneaker or tennis ball wrapped in a pillowcase to help maintain shape. Follow the label on your pillow before using that method. It is not permission to tumble-dry a newer spot-clean-only insert. Air dry a spot-treated insert as directed and check thick areas for retained moisture. Before re-covering either type, examine seams and feel beyond the outer skin; a dry surface can conceal a still-damp interior. Do not speed drying with concentrated high heat.

Step 7: Re-cover and check readiness for feeding

Inspect the pillow's shape, filling distribution and fabric condition. Fit the dry cover without straining its zipper, and check that no loose parts or exposed filling remain. If the pillow smells musty or has remained damp inside, keep it out of use while resolving the problem. Wash covers after soiling and inspect the insert each time rather than waiting for visible damage. Store the pillow dry between uses.
