How to Clean a Braun Silk-expert Pro 5 IPL
The Braun Silk-expert Pro 5 presses a precision optical system directly against prepared skin, so the treatment head can collect fine hair fragments, oil and residue that interfere with clean contact. Braun's current service guidance says to unplug the device, let it cool and gently wipe the treatment window and glass filter with a dry lint-free cloth, avoiding water and harsh cleaner on those optical surfaces. Some PL5-series product instructions allow a controlled moist cloth on the outer body, which is not permission to wet the window, socket, vents or power supply. This guide uses the stricter optical method and treats each removable cap separately. It also distinguishes removable surface film from a chipped filter, burned spot or internal discoloration. Confirm the PL5XXX number before cleaning because head shapes and supplied accessories vary across Silk-expert Pro 5 kits.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Unplug every powered component
Release the treatment button, disconnect the power supply from the outlet and unplug the low-voltage connector from the handset when the design permits. Move the cord and adapter away from the cleaning area. Never clean the Silk-expert while it is powered or resting on damp skin-care supplies.
Step 2: Let the treatment head cool
Place the handset on a dry heat-resistant surface until the window and cap are at room temperature. Do not attempt to dissolve residue while the glass is warm. Cooling protects both your fingers and the optical filter from sudden temperature change.
Step 3: Remove and identify the installed cap
Pull off the standard, wide or precision head according to the manual. Note which cap was used on which body area and inspect its skin-contact rim, opening and sensor cutouts. Do not pry at the glass filter or attempt to separate factory-installed optical layers.
Step 4: Dry-wipe the treatment window and glass filter
Use a fresh dry lint-free cloth and light straight strokes across the window and filter. Rotate to a clean area after each pass so residue is lifted rather than spread. Braun specifically advises a dry cloth here. Do not use water, alcohol, glass spray, bleach, acetone or an abrasive pad on the optics.
Step 5: Clean removable heads without flooding them
Wipe the accessible inner and outer surfaces of each cap with the same dry cloth. Clear loose hair from sensor openings by lifting it outward with the cloth, not by poking through an opening. If the exact cap manual allows another method, follow that model-specific instruction rather than assuming every cap is washable.
Step 6: Wipe the handset exterior conditionally
If the PL5XXX manual permits a moist exterior cloth, wring a second cloth until it is barely damp and wipe the handle and buttons while keeping the window, seams, vents and power socket dry. Follow immediately with a dry cloth. Otherwise remain with dry cleaning for the entire unit.
Step 7: Inspect for optical damage
Hold the cooled head under angled light. A clean filter should not retain visible hair, greasy streaks or moisture. Stop if you see a crack, chip, blister, dark burned mark beneath the surface or deformation around the cap. Those conditions can affect energy delivery and are not cleaning problems.
Step 8: Reassemble only when dry
Seat the selected cap evenly without touching the cleaned window. Coil the power lead loosely and store the handset, caps and adapter in their dry case away from direct heat and dust. Before the next session, prepare clean dry skin and verify that the selected window and both skin-contact sensors remain clear.
