Step 1: Identify the model and prepare a clean surface

Check that the thermometer is the ThermoScan 7 IRT6520 and set it aside between measurements with the power off. Place the alcohol, clean swab, dry cloth, and replacement lens filter on a clean surface away from children. Do not use a forehead-thermometer wiping time or a clinical disinfectant protocol simply because it also carries the Braun name. Keep liquids away from the battery door and controls. If there is visible liquid intrusion, a cracked body, or a damaged tip, stop and seek Braun's advice before using it again.

Step 2: Eject the used disposable lens filter

Use the ejector to remove and discard the used lens filter. Braun directs using a new, clean genuine filter for the next measurement rather than washing the disposable one. Keep unused filters in their box until needed and avoid touching the inner measuring surface. If the thermometer was used without a filter, the manufacturer specifically directs cleaning the probe tip. A filter left on the instrument is not proof that the lens below it is clean, particularly after accidental unprotected use or visible contamination.

Step 3: Inspect the exposed probe tip gently

Look at the tip in good light without scraping, pressing, or attempting to unscrew it. Braun describes this as the thermometer's most delicate part. Visible dirt, earwax, or a smudge needs careful cleaning, but a scratch or broken surface is a support issue rather than a polishing task. Do not push a needle, toothpick, or hard tool against the measuring window. Keep the distinction between cleaning the instrument and cleaning someone's ear: this procedure is not an instruction to use alcohol or a swab inside an ear canal.

Step 4: Wipe with the specified alcohol

Moisten a cotton swab or soft cloth with 70% isopropyl alcohol and gently wipe the probe-tip surface as Braun directs. The swab should be damp, not dripping into the instrument. Use light contact to remove visible contamination rather than repeated hard rubbing. Do not spray alcohol directly at the probe, pour it into the tip, or soak the thermometer. Avoid substituting hand sanitizer, fragrance-containing wipes, household glass cleaner, or an abrasive paste, since those are not the model-specific method described by Braun.

Step 5: Allow the probe to air-dry completely

Let the alcohol evaporate completely before fitting a new lens filter or taking another reading. The IRT6520 manual bases readiness on complete drying; a fixed waiting time copied from another Braun model is not a substitute for that condition. Do not speed drying with a hair dryer or touch the clean tip to check it with a finger. If a visible deposit remains, reassess gently and contact support if it cannot be removed without force. A persistently marked or damaged window should not be treated as normal simply because it feels dry.

Step 6: Clean the body and storage surfaces separately

Use a soft dry cloth for the display and exterior, as Braun's IRT6520 manual specifies. Do not immerse the thermometer in water or another liquid, and do not flood buttons or the battery compartment. Keep the case or cradle free of dust so storage does not immediately recontaminate the probe area. If the housing has contamination that a dry cloth cannot address, obtain Braun's model-specific instructions instead of assuming the probe-tip alcohol permission covers every part. Avoid opening the instrument beyond normal battery access.

Step 7: Fit a fresh filter and check normal operation

Once the tip is fully dry, fit a new genuine lens filter without touching its measuring surface. Follow the manual for placement, age selection, and temperature measurement; dirt is only one possible reason for an unexpected reading. A persistent filter warning, system error, or accuracy concern needs the relevant troubleshooting or Braun support, not repeated scrubbing or home recalibration. Store the thermometer and unused filters in a dry, clean place away from sunlight, using its protective case or cradle. Do not delay appropriate medical advice while trying to resolve a device problem.
