How to Clean a Breville Smart Waffle and Overflow Moat
The Smart Waffle's overflow moat catches batter, but that batter still needs to be removed after cooking. The cooking plates, hinges and moat have a nonstick finish, so the right technique depends on controlled wiping rather than force. This guide covers Breville Smart Waffle Pro BWM620 and BWM640 models using their shared instruction manual. It separates a safely cooled cleaning stage from storage, and it does not treat fixed cooking plates as removable dishwasher trays. Sticky buildup is a reason to clean carefully, not to scrape harder.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Turn off, unplug and allow safe cooling
Set the POWER/MENU dial to OFF and unplug the waffle maker. Let it cool before cleaning or handling the plates. Breville notes that food residue can be easier to remove when the appliance is slightly warm, but this does not mean working on a hot cooking surface. Keep children away while it cools and leave space around the unit. Do not pour water onto hot plates to create steam. If the cord, hinge or housing is damaged, deal with that separately instead of treating a cleaning session as a repair.
Step 2: Remove loose batter from plates and moat
With the appliance safely cooled, lift loose food using a soft cloth. Work through the grid and around the overflow channel so crumbs do not remain hidden under the rim. Avoid using a fork, knife or metal spatula as a cleaning tool. Support the lid by its normal handle and hinge movement; do not press it backward for more access. The moat is part of the cooking surface, not a drain that can be flushed out with a stream of water.
Step 3: Wipe with warm soapy water, not a flood
Use a soft cloth moistened with warm soapy water and control the amount of liquid. Clean the cooking plates and moat in sections, folding to a clean part of the cloth as residue lifts. The shared Breville manual says not to immerse any part of the waffle maker. Do not hold it under a tap or tip a bowl of water over the grids. A damp cleaning surface and an electrically powered appliance filled with water are very different conditions.
Step 4: Loosen persistent residue with an approved soft tool
If a small patch remains, use the manual's permitted non-abrasive plastic pad or nylon brush with warm soapy water. Work lightly in the direction that gives access to the grid, checking the coating frequently. Do not use steel wool, abrasive powder or a metal brush. A long-standing greasy film may take more than one careful pass, but do not escalate to oven cleaner or a concentrated degreaser. If the finish is peeling or chipped, stop scraping and ask Breville about the condition.
Step 5: Check hinges and the exterior separately
The manual includes the hinges among the nonstick-coated areas. Remove accessible food gently without dismantling the hinge or forcing cleaner into the joint. Wipe exterior splashes with a controlled cloth and keep moisture away from the display, dial and cord connection. Do not assume stainless-looking housing makes the whole appliance compatible with metal polish. Keep the exterior cloth separate from the one carrying batter crumbs so you do not scratch a smooth surface while wiping it. Inspect the area around the handle before moving the unit.
Step 6: Remove soap and let the appliance dry
Use a clean lightly damp cloth to pick up detergent residue from the food-contact surfaces, then leave the lid open enough for those areas to dry. Check the corners of the moat and accessible hinge area instead of judging dryness only from the flat housing. Do not energize the waffle maker solely to burn away leftover cleaner. After cleaning, a persistent chemical smell or sticky film means the residue-removal step needs attention. Keep the unplugged appliance on its stable work surface until cooling and drying are complete.
Step 7: Store correctly and avoid buildup next time
Once fully cool and dry, use the locking latch for storage and wrap the cord around the designated underside area. Store on a dry, level surface as Breville directs. The latch should not be used while batter is in the cooking plates. Clean after each use, before repeated baking turns residue into a thicker layer. Breville also warns against nonstick cooking sprays because they can affect the plates' performance. Follow the recipe and appliance instructions rather than adding more spray to compensate for a dirty or damaged surface.
