How to Clean a CamelBak Reservoir and Tube
A hydration reservoir is clean only when the bladder, drink tube and bite valve have all been washed, rinsed and dried; an open-looking reservoir can still trap sweetened drink inside its hose. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Empty and rinse immediately
Discard remaining drink and rinse the reservoir with warm water as soon as practical. Run rinse water through the tube and bite valve instead of only swirling the bladder. Sugary or electrolyte drinks need prompt cleaning because residue in the hose feeds odor and film.
Step 2: Separate model-approved components
Disconnect the drink tube and remove the bite valve according to the Crux or model instructions. Note the orientation of valves, collars and seals. Do not pry a fixed fitting or use a sharp tool that can nick a seal and create a leak.
Step 3: Wash the reservoir with mild soap
Fill the bladder about halfway with warm water and add a small amount of mild soap. Close it and shake thoroughly so solution contacts the corners and closure. Open it, scrub the interior gently with the reservoir brush and pay attention to the bottom folds without abrading the film.
Step 4: Pull solution through the tube
Raise the filled reservoir and pinch or open the bite valve so soapy water flows through the complete tube. This replaces old liquid rather than merely wetting the first inch. Use the flexible tube brush from the detached end when film or flavored-drink residue remains.
Step 5: Clean the bite valve and fittings
Wash removable bite-valve parts with warm soapy water and a small soft brush. Compress the silicone so hidden drinking slits open, then rinse them. Inspect O-rings and the valve for cuts, swelling or persistent discoloration; damaged parts should be replaced instead of aggressively scrubbed.
Step 6: Deep-clean periodically
For odor or persistent film, use a CamelBak cleaning tablet according to its directions and allow the specified treatment time. Run the solution through the tube so every wetted component is treated. Do not mix cleaning products, use undiluted bleach or boil the reservoir unless the exact CamelBak instructions expressly permit a method.
Step 7: Rinse until no soap or tablet remains
Rinse the bladder several times with clean water and send each rinse through the drink tube and valve. Smell and taste a drop of the final rinse. Continue until there is no foam, cleaner odor or flavored residue.
Step 8: Dry every component open
Shake out water, prop the reservoir open with a purpose-made dryer or clean safe support and hang it upside down. Hang the tube with both ends open and set the disassembled valve where air can reach it. Do not reassemble or cap the system while droplets remain.
Step 9: Reassemble and leak-test
When all parts are completely dry, reinstall seals, valve and tube in their original orientation. Add a small amount of clean water, close the reservoir and squeeze it over a sink while checking every connection. Drain and dry again before storage, or fill immediately for use.
