Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Match maintenance to the symptom
Print a nozzle check for missing lines, faded colors or horizontal streaks. Reserve Roller Cleaning for pickup trouble and Bottom Plate Cleaning for ink on the reverse of paper. Dust on scans belongs to the platen glass or document cover. Canon's separate routines prevent a feed problem from triggering unnecessary ink-consuming head cleaning.
Step 2: Wipe the exterior and scanner glass safely
Turn the printer off and unplug it before manual wiping. Use a soft dry cloth on controls and housing. Clean the platen glass and document-cover surface with a soft cloth lightly dampened with water and wrung well, then dry. Do not spray the printer, use abrasive cleaner or let moisture run into the scanner edge.
Step 3: Print and read a nozzle check
Reconnect power, load clean plain paper and open Maintenance from the HOME screen. Select the nozzle-check function and print the pattern. Compare every color grid with the manual's examples. If all lines are present, do not clean the head; investigate paper, print settings or alignment instead of consuming ink without evidence.
Step 4: Run standard print-head cleaning when indicated
From Maintenance, select Cleaning and confirm the operation only when the nozzle pattern has missing lines or streaks. Wait until the printer finishes without opening covers or switching off power, then print another nozzle check. Canon notes that cleaning uses ink. Never remove, rinse or wipe the print head to imitate the automated cycle.
Step 5: Escalate to deep cleaning carefully
If two standard cleaning attempts do not correct the pattern, use Deep Cleaning through the documented menu. This consumes more ink, so check ink levels first. Print another nozzle pattern afterward. If the result still fails, Canon's sequence calls for turning the printer off, waiting 24 hours without unplugging it, and then trying deep cleaning again.
Step 6: Use Roller Cleaning only for feed symptoms
Select Maintenance, then Roller cleaning. Confirm, remove all paper from the rear tray and press OK so the rollers rotate without paper. When prompted, load three sheets of Letter-size plain paper and continue. The printer ejects the sheets as the routine finishes. Canon warns this operation wears the rollers, so do not run it casually.
Step 7: Perform manual roller wiping only if directed
If the automated roller routine fails and the manual directs the next procedure, turn off and unplug the printer. Open the scanning unit and use a well-wrung damp cloth while rotating the identified rear-tray roller more than two full turns. Do not touch it with bare fingers, flood the area or tilt the printer, which can leak ink.
Step 8: Clean the bottom plate for back-side smudges
Use Canon's Bottom Plate Cleaning function when paper exits with ink on its reverse. Prepare and fold the plain sheet exactly as the on-screen or online instructions show, then load it in the specified orientation. This sheet wipes accessible internal projections during transport. Do not reach inside with solvent or a loose cloth while the printer is powered.
Step 9: Test once and stop unnecessary cycles
Print a normal color test and inspect feeding, front output and the back of the sheet. Align the print head only when ruled lines remain misaligned.
