How to Clean a Formlabs Form 4 Resin Tank
A Formlabs Form 4 resin tank needs a different cleaning routine from an FDM printer bed or an older generation of resin vat. Small cured fragments can cause another failed print, while a scratched film or resin trapped between its layers may make the tank unusable. The current Form 4 instructions permit a controlled IPA wipe on the film; blanket advice copied from another printer can therefore be wrong. This guide focuses on Form 4 and Form 4B tanks, not the extra debris-catcher assemblies on some Form 4L tanks.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Check for damage before choosing a cleaning route
End the active print and review what failed. Wear protective equipment and work in the ventilation conditions required by the resin and IPA safety data sheets. Keep ignition sources away from solvent. Inspect for a leaking tank or an extensive spill before attempting another powered operation. If resin has reached inside the printer, use Formlabs’ support route and document the spill. Do not print a cleaning sheet in a visibly damaged or leaking tank simply because that option appears on the touchscreen.
Step 2: Remove failed-print debris with approved tools
For an intact tank, follow the current Form 4 cleaning-sheet or manual debris-removal instructions. The cleaning-sheet process runs with the tank installed and requires the build platform, mixer, and cartridge removed as specified. Follow the on-screen sequence and use the proper holder. For manual removal, use the plastic scraper’s flat edge with minimal force, not a metal scraper or a pointed corner dug into the film. Let drips remain over the tank when lifting a sheet.
Step 3: Prepare the tank for bench cleaning
After any powered cleaning-sheet operation has finished, switch the printer off and disconnect power before the bench-cleaning stage. Handle removable components in the prescribed order so a resin-coated platform cannot drip into an exposed printer. Carry the tank level with its lid fitted when appropriate. Empty resin into a suitable opaque container before cleaning the film. If fragments remain in resin intended for reuse, strain it using the specified fine filter. Keep resin identity and version clear; do not mix unknown material into a clean supply.
Step 4: Clean the film only when it needs cleaning
Support the empty tank on a clean, flat surface, turning it over carefully if its underside needs attention. Check the surface underneath first: one stray cured fragment can press into the film. Apply a small amount of clean IPA to a lint-free, nonabrasive cloth and gently remove contamination. Use a fresh cloth if streaks remain. Do not use paper towels on the film, and do not pour solvent into a full tank. This is a controlled wipe, not an invitation to scrub, stretch, or soak the film.
Step 5: Clean and correctly refit the wear strips
Remove the mixer and the two wear strips as the manufacturer shows, keeping resin off the bench. Wipe contaminated strips with a little clean IPA on a suitable lint-free wipe, then let them air-dry. Align the middle mounting points before clicking the outer points into place; verify that both strips are secure. Refit the mixer and confirm free movement along the strips. Do not lubricate this path with an improvised oil. Clean the plastic scraper separately; its Form Wash permission does not apply to immersing the entire tank.
Step 6: Inspect the exterior and decide whether to replace
Remove exterior resin with a clean IPA-dampened lint-free cloth and inspect the underside before returning the tank to the printer. Look for significant wear, punctures, cracks, or resin between the two film layers. Contamination trapped between those layers is a replacement issue, not something to squeeze out or repair with tape. If there was an extensive spill, follow the separate Formlabs spill inspection guidance before restarting. A clear-looking tank does not establish that the printer beneath it is clean.
Step 7: Dry, reassemble, and keep the waste contained
Allow cleaned parts to dry fully before reinstalling them. Confirm the tank is properly seated and latched, the wear strips and mixer are correct, and only the intended resin is returned. Change contaminated gloves before touching clean controls or storage containers. Handle used cloths, filters, solvent, and uncured resin according to their safety data sheets and local disposal requirements; do not pour them down a sink. Record why cleaning was needed so recurring failures lead to a print-setting or hardware investigation instead of repeated scraping.
