How to Clean and Maintain a Concept2 SkiErg
A Concept2 SkiErg routes two working cords through pulleys into a flywheel, so its care is not the same as wiping down a cable machine. Concept2 recommends mild cleaning for the grips and exterior, plus a cord inspection every 500,000 meters, about 50 hours of use. The Performance Monitor and flywheel must not receive direct spray, and the cords should remain untwisted and free of oil or solvent. This guide covers routine owner cleaning and the visible inspection points without turning dust removal into unapproved pulley or recoil service.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Let the handles return and stabilize the unit
Finish the workout and allow both handles to return under control. Make sure a wall-mounted SkiErg is secure or a floor stand is level before cleaning. Remove a phone or accessory and keep people from pulling the cords. If the Performance Monitor uses external power, disconnect it according to its instructions.
Step 2: Untwist the cords before inspection
Let each handle hang in its normal position and correct only visible twists using Concept2's handling guidance. Do not detach knots, pull cords sideways or release a handle so it snaps upward. A clean cord that remains twisted can wear unevenly, so alignment is part of the care check rather than a cosmetic detail.
Step 3: Clean the grips every few workouts
Concept2 recommends cleaning the grips with mild soap and water every few workouts. Apply the solution to a cloth, wipe all hand-contact surfaces and remove residue with another damp cloth. Dry thoroughly before use. Do not soak a handle or use a slick conditioner, as residue can reduce grip security during a forceful pull.
Step 4: Wipe the frame and mounting area
Use a cloth with mild soap or a nonabrasive household cleaner on the frame, lower bracket, floor stand and accessible covers. Clean dried sweat around fasteners without flooding them. Keep liquid out of pulley openings, seams and the flywheel enclosure, and never pressure-wash a mounted machine or allow runoff onto the wall or floor anchor.
Step 5: Clean the Performance Monitor
Wipe the monitor with a clean, slightly damp microfiber cloth and dry it. Apply no spray directly to the display, buttons, ports or battery compartment. Clean around the mount carefully without changing its angle by force. A nonresponsive key, fogged display or corroded battery contact needs troubleshooting rather than more liquid.
Step 6: Vacuum flywheel intake dust
Use low suction and a soft attachment on the outside of the perforated flywheel housing. Do not insert a tool through openings or use compressed air that drives dust inward. At the longer maintenance interval specified by Concept2, open only the cover sections shown in the official procedure and clean the enclosure dry, avoiding vanes, wiring and the recoil assembly.
Step 7: Inspect cords at 500,000 meters
At every 500,000 meters, roughly 50 hours, examine the full accessible cord path as Concept2 instructs. Look for excessive fuzzing, cuts, flattening, discoloration or damage where the cord passes a pulley. Compare both sides. Do not coat a suspect area with wax, oil or adhesive; replace or service a damaged cord according to the manufacturer.
Step 8: Check pulleys and handle return
Remove only loose dry debris from accessible pulley guards with a soft brush or vacuum. Pull each handle slowly and evenly, then guide it back. The cords should travel without scraping, crossing or delayed recoil. Noise, unequal return or a pulley that does not rotate normally calls for official service steps, not solvent or random lubrication.
Step 9: Dry and complete a gentle test
Confirm that grips, frame, floor and monitor are dry. Restore monitor power if needed and complete several light alternating pulls before a workout. Check that both handles return evenly and the flywheel spins without contact. Record the meter count when performing the scheduled cord check so the next inspection is based on use rather than memory.
