Step 1: Confirm the CPM-700 model and let it cool

Check the label before applying these directions. A machine with a removable popping plate, stirring arm, and flip-over bowl is not cleaned like a hot-air chute or a theater-style kettle. Switch off, unplug, and allow the appliance to cool completely. Finish serving according to the operating instructions before beginning cleanup; do not handle a hot plate simply because the popcorn has been removed. Keep the cord and base away from the sink, and set aside a clear drying space for the removable parts.

Step 2: Separate the bowl, cap, and popping plate

Empty leftover kernels and loose crumbs into the trash. Remove the bowl cap so its edges and the bowl’s ventilation openings are accessible. Release the cooled popping plate using its locking levers and handles, following the CPM-700 illustrated quick reference. Support the assembly rather than tugging on the stirring arm. If the plate does not release normally, recheck the latch position instead of prying at the housing. Keep the electrical base on the dry side of your workspace.

Step 3: Wash the bowl and cap without scouring

The removable bowl and cap can be washed in a dishwasher or by hand. For hand washing, use mild dishwashing liquid, water, and a soft cloth or the non-scrubbing side of a sponge. Work around the rim and cap separately so grease is not simply spread across the clear plastic. Rinse away detergent and inspect the vents for remaining food. Do not use a rough sponge face to restore clarity: scratches will not wash away later. A cracked bowl or damaged handle needs assessment, not a stronger cleaner.

Step 4: Clean the plate with its stirring rod attached

Cuisinart specifies that the popping plate and stirring rod stay together for cleaning. Wash the cooled assembly gently, or place it in the dishwasher as the manual permits. Do not unscrew or bend the rod to reach underneath it. Work a soft wet cloth around accessible residue, allowing the wash water to loosen it before another gentle pass. Never scrape the surface with a knife or metal utensil. If burnt residue resists ordinary washing, stop before damaging the finish and ask Cuisinart about the affected part.

Step 5: Wipe the powered base without flooding it

Use only a damp cloth on the outside of the unplugged, cooled base. Wring it out first, especially before approaching the switch, cord entry, or openings. Do not immerse the base, rinse it under a faucet, spray cleaner into it, or allow liquid onto the heating plate. Solvents, scrubbing brushes, and aggressive chemical cleaners are not the solution to spilled oil around electrical parts. If liquid has entered the base, leave it unplugged and seek service advice; a dry-looking exterior does not prove the inside is safe.

Step 6: Dry and reassemble the plate correctly

Dry the washed pieces thoroughly before bringing them back to the base. Pay attention to water retained around the bowl rim, handles, and plate assembly. On the unplugged appliance, align the plate’s front and rear notches with the base grooves and gently seat the handles so the plate lies flat. The model’s interlock requires correct placement; never hold a switch or latch down to bypass it. Set the bowl handles into their matching grooves. Recheck alignment if anything rocks or feels forced.

Step 7: Store clean and prevent the next residue buildup

Clean after each use instead of letting old oil and seasoning accumulate over several movie nights. Store the appliance unplugged and fully dry, with the parts protected from heavy objects that could distort them. Before the next batch, remove the bowl cap: it must not cover the bowl’s vents during popping. Follow the model’s recipe and oil instructions rather than adding ingredients to burn away old residue. Persistent electrical odors, damaged wiring, or a stirring mechanism that will not work normally call for service, not repeated test runs.
