How to Clean a Dyson Airwrap Filter Correctly
A Dyson Airwrap draws air through the filter at the bottom of its handle. Hair products, lint, and dust on that mesh can restrict airflow and trigger a flashing or continuously illuminated filter light, but the inner mesh and removable outer cage do not share the same cleaning limits. Dyson commonly directs owners to dry-brush the filter mesh, while certain removable cages may be rinsed or deep-cleaned depending on the Airwrap generation. Water or cleaner must never enter the handle. Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Identify the Airwrap and warning
Find the serial number and matching Dyson support page. Note whether the light is flashing, continuously white, or another color, because indicators differ by model. Dyson commonly recommends routine monthly filter care and cleaning when the white LED signals restriction. Persistent red or fault indications may require support rather than more brushing.
Step 2: Switch off, unplug, and cool
Turn the Airwrap off, unplug it from the outlet, remove the attachment, and let the handle cool completely. Never open or clean the filter while the styler is connected. Set it on a dry surface away from a sink so rinse water for the detached cage cannot reach the handle or cord.
Step 3: Release the outer filter cage
Follow the model animation or manual to rotate, slide, or open the cage. Do not squeeze it with pliers or pry at its seam. Slide the loosened cage onto the cord if that is the illustrated position. Keep the plug and control handle out of the cleaning area.
Step 4: Dry-brush the exposed filter mesh
Place the supplied circular brush around the mesh and rotate it with light pressure, or use a clean soft dry toothbrush in repeated passes. Work around the full circumference until visible dust is removed. Dyson instructs owners not to use water or cleaning chemicals on the filter mesh. Do not push bristles through it.
Step 5: Brush the cage inside and out
Clean the detached cage with the Dyson brush, reaching its perforations and inner edge. Tap loose debris onto a dry surface. Hair spray and styling residue may require the model's approved wet cage-cleaning method, but dry brushing should come first so dust does not become a paste.
Step 6: Rinse the cage only when approved
If the exact Dyson instructions permit it, remove the cage fully from the cable as shown and rinse it under warm running water. Some older procedures allow a deeper soak in warm soapy water for about 30 minutes; do this only when the matching support page says so. Never soak the handle, cable, plug, or exposed filter mesh.
Step 7: Rinse away every trace of soap
For an approved wet clean, rotate the cage under clean water until no foam, fragrance, or slick residue remains. Inspect the holes against a light. Do not use a pin, metal brush, bleach, descaler, alcohol, or abrasive cleaner to open blocked perforations; these can damage the finish or screen.
Step 8: Dry the cage completely
Shake water from the detached cage and leave it in moving room-temperature air until fully dry, including its seam and inner rim. Do not use the Airwrap, a hair dryer, radiator, oven, or direct high heat to accelerate drying. Never refit a damp cage over the electrical handle.
Step 9: Refit and lock the cage
Align the cage around the cable and handle exactly as the model instructions show, close it, and rotate or slide it to the locked position. It should sit evenly without a gap. Do not power the styler if the cage is distorted, cracked, loose, or missing.
Step 10: Test airflow and change habits
Once every part is dry and locked, reconnect the Airwrap and test it briefly. If the filter light or reduced airflow persists after a correct cleaning, switch off and contact Dyson. Reduce buildup by storing the styler away from loose lint and by avoiding direct hair-spray application near the filter intake.
