Step-by-step instructions

Step 1: Confirm the dryer model

Find the model and serial information on the cord label or product record and compare the filter design with Dyson's guide. Standard consumer and Professional instructions are not interchangeable. Do not soak a standard consumer filter just because a Professional video shows water.

Step 2: Switch off, unplug and cool

Turn the dryer off, remove the plug with dry hands and allow the handle and attachments to cool completely. Work away from a sink. Never clean the filter while the dryer is connected, hot or resting where it can fall into water.

Step 3: Wipe loose dust from the exterior

Use a dry lint-free cloth around the lower handle and cage. Keep fingers and tools away from the plug pins. Do not use household spray, alcohol, polish or a wet wipe on the intake assembly.

Step 4: Release the filter cage

Step 7: Inspect the intake

Use bright light to check that the mesh is evenly open and free from dense lint, hair-product powder and hair. Do not dismantle the handle to reach remaining internal debris. A dented mesh, damaged cage or persistent blockage needs Dyson support.

Step 8: Refit and lock the cage

Slide the clean cage back over the mesh, align its indicator dot and rotate clockwise until the dot sits under the closed-circle mark or the exact model's locked symbol. Confirm that the cage is seated evenly and does not rattle.

Step 9: Test airflow briefly

Move the dryer away from the cleaning area, ensure everything is dry and reconnect it. Run it briefly on a normal setting and listen for steady airflow. If three lights continue flashing, switch off and unplug rather than repeatedly restarting an overheated or obstructed unit.
