How to Clean a Dyson Gen5detect Vacuum
The Dyson Gen5detect combines a washable rear HEPA filter, a clear bin, cyclone body, Fluffy Optic cleaner head, Motorbar and Hair screw tool, but only selected detached parts can contact water. Dyson's official vacuum-care guidance recommends washing filters about monthly, drying them at least 24 hours and never washing the cyclone. It also says a removable soft Fluffy brush bar may be rinsed while some other brush bars and all powered housings must remain dry. Gen5detect is model SV23; included heads vary by package and region, so the support page for the serial number decides which roller releases and washing steps apply. Empty at MAX and disconnect the click-in battery before any airway or brush work.

Step-by-step instructions
Step 1: Switch off and remove the battery
Switch off using the power button, disconnect the charger and click the battery out of the handle. Let the machine cool after sustained high-power use. Detach the wand and cleaner head before working near a brush. Never press a control during maintenance.
Step 2: Empty the bin at the MAX line
Hold the vacuum over a trash container with the bin pointing down and operate the red emptying mechanism. Do not let debris exceed the MAX mark, because overfilling loads the shroud and filter. Close the bin door until it clicks before reinstalling or removing the bin.
Step 3: Wipe the detached bin and cyclone correctly
Release the clear bin only by the documented control. Dyson says to clean the bin with a damp lint-free cloth and let it dry completely; do not submerge it, dishwash it or use detergent, polish or air freshener. Wipe the cyclone shroud dry. Never rinse the cyclone, main body, LCD, contacts or battery.
Step 4: Remove and tap the HEPA filter
Twist the rear filter free according to the Gen5detect support guide. Tap it lightly over a bin to loosen dry dust. Do not strike a hard edge, brush the pleats or use compressed air. Inspect for cracks or distorted seals that cleaning cannot repair.
Step 5: Wash the filter about monthly
Dyson recommends monthly washing for cordless filters. Use cold water only, without detergent. Rinse the outside and fill the open end as directed, cover it with your hand, shake gently and empty. Repeat until the water runs clear, then shake out excess water.
Step 6: Air-dry for at least 24 hours
Stand the filter in moving room air for at least 24 hours and longer if any pleat feels cool or damp. Do not use a dryer, oven, microwave, radiator, hair dryer or direct flame. A wet filter can damage the motor and quickly trap dust as a dense paste.
Step 7: Clean the Fluffy Optic roller separately
Unlock the end cap and remove the soft roller exactly as the head guide shows. Keep the end cap and powered head housing dry. Dyson permits washing the removable Fluffy roller with water; rub away lint gently, squeeze excess water and stand it upright to dry for at least 24 hours before refitting.
Step 8: Dry-clean the Motorbar and Hair screw tool
Remove visible hair with fingers or blunt scissors, cutting away from bristles, seals and plastic. The Motorbar uses hair-removal vanes, but end channels can still collect thread. Do not submerge either powered tool or wash a brush bar unless its exact Dyson instructions explicitly identify it as removable and washable.
Step 9: Check airways, optics and exterior
Look through the wand, inlet and detached tools against light and pull out reachable obstructions without a sharp rod. Wipe the Fluffy Optic illumination lens, LCD and exterior sensor areas with a dry microfiber cloth. Keep water out of the built-in crevice-tool channel and all electrical contacts.
Step 10: Reassemble dry and test
Lock the dry soft roller into its head, fit the dry filter, bin, wand, selected tool and battery. Test first in Eco or Auto mode. If the display reports a blockage or filter problem, stop and recheck seals and every detachable airway; repeated Boost operation will not safely clear an obstruction.
