How to Clean a Dyson PencilVac Vacuum

Step 1: Power down and separate from charging

Stop the machine, remove it from the dock, and disconnect the charger from power before maintenance. Do not press the trigger while parts are removed. Check the display for a blockage or dirty-filter message and note where performance changed. Let warm components cool before opening the bin or filter.

Step 2: Empty the bin at the MAX line

Hold the PencilVac over a waste container and operate the red bin release as Dyson shows. Empty before debris passes the MAX mark because overfilling can pack dirt into airways. Keep the bin low inside the trash to reduce dust, and never pull the runner or seals with excessive force.

Step 3: Remove and rinse the bin

Use the red button on the bin runner to slide the bin off according to Dyson's support instructions. Rinse the removed bin and its approved seals under running water without detergent. Do not wash the powered wand, cyclone or motor section unless the exact diagram labels a piece washable. Shake away droplets gently.

Step 4: Remove and split the filter

Squeeze and pull the red top tab to release the filter, then separate its mesh and pleated sections as shown. Tap loose dust into a bin before adding water. Inspect both pieces for tears, distortion, or damaged seals. Do not insert tools between pleats or use compressed air.

Step 5: Wash both filter sections with water only

Rinse the mesh and pleated parts under running water, massage or shake them gently, discard dirty water, and repeat until it runs clear. Dyson's filter method does not call for detergent. Avoid dishwasher, washing machine, bleach, hot water, and abrasive brushes, which can damage media.

Step 6: Dry the filter for at least 24 hours

Shake out excess water and leave both sections in a warm, well-ventilated room for at least 24 hours, or longer if still damp. Position them so air reaches all sides. Do not use a dryer, oven, microwave, radiator, hair dryer, or direct high heat. A damp filter can harm the motor.

Step 7: Clean the Fluffycones head by the exact guide

Detach the cleaner head with the machine off. Remove visible wrapped hair and thread only from owner-accessible areas, cutting away from soft rollers, seals, and wiring if the guide permits. Wash a cone or component only when Dyson labels that exact part washable; keep the motorized housing and electrical contacts dry.

Step 8: Check airways and sensors without poking

Look through the wand, bin inlet, and cleaner-head airway for a visible blockage. Remove loose material from an accessible end with a blunt plastic tool, never metal or a long object that can puncture the tube. Wipe external sensors and clear windows with a dry lint-free cloth. Do not spray lubricant or cleaner inside.

Step 9: Wipe the dock and exterior

With the dock unplugged, use a dry cloth on its surfaces and charging contacts. Wipe the PencilVac body and display dry. Do not wet the battery, charger, plug, powered wand, buttons, or connector pins. Burn marks, swelling, liquid entry, or damaged cables require Dyson support.

Step 10: Reassemble only when completely dry

Confirm the bin, seals, mesh, and deepest filter pleats are bone-dry. Reconnect the filter sections, seat the filter and bin until they lock, and attach the cleaner head. Test at low demand on a clear floor. Stop for a repeated alert, unusual heat, air leak, or loss of suction after correct reassembly.
